About this deal

I used the lens extensively with the 1.4x and 2x Sigma TCs. I tried it with the 1.7x too but nothing 'serious' so I can't offer an opinion on that. You loose the in-lens focus replaced by the TC's focus when you do that, so I don't enjoy it as much ... at least not with this lens. As they say a picture is worth a 1000 words, so I guess I have 1,000,000 words or there abouts on the subject: Users who are in the market for this type of lens are probably already aware of the heft and size that they demand, and the Sigma 120-300mm ƒ/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports is no exception. At around 8 pounds and over 15 inches long, this is a heavy, large piece of equipment. However, despite the weight and bulk, this Sigma tele-zoom allows you to save quite a bit of dough compared to competing models from other manufacturers, while still having excellent build quality, as well as excellent image quality. With the use of the optional Sigma APO teleconverters, this lens can be used as a 420mm F4 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or a 600mm F5.6 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 2X teleconverter.

As with focusing, the front element of the lens neither rotates nor extends when zooming, which allows for easy use of screw-on filters like circular polarizers (the Sigma 120-300mm takes 105mm filters; no option for a drop-in filter). Like many high-end lenses, the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 Sport has a constant aperture, meaning the aperture doesn't change automatically when zooming. With G Master lenses we always include the latest, innovative technologies. We never compromise. Always the latest technologies […] Basically we’re targeting the best of the best. Without compromise. Every time we plan to make a G Master series lens, we aim for ‘no competition’. Which means the highest spec. We don’t compromise on anything. Autofocus, image quality, light weight. What I mean by that is we develop new technologies every time.’ Another aspect of this is the message that Sigma is sending to Nikon shooters (I doubt Canon shooters will care). Seems as though they made a decision that it is not particularly important to cater to the Nikon standard. If they wish to be taken seriously by pros and serious amateur photographers, then I wonder why they would take a shortcut like this. Obviously, it is easier and less costly to have just a single configuration, but I think it is a bad move on their part. NIKON D3S + 120-300mm f/2.8 @ 140mm, ISO 1600, 1/1600, f/4.0Now your just contradicting yourself, first mirrorless ain’t necessary smaller as it has much to do with generation, then someone show that the 120-400 is latest generation Nikon and suddenly Nikon made an old generation in 2020 and those can make it much smaller. Contrary to any sort of evidence of the matter. Is your mind able to grasp the concept of generation? I had high hopes but I am starting to get worried… Well to make things even more clear for you the generation E FL started with the 400mm f2.8 E FL and ended with the 120-300mm f2.8. That generation did not include a 300mm f2.8. Those lenses were around 900gr heavier than corresponding Canon/Sony lenses. So no, Nikon didn’t know/want to make lighter super teles at the time. With 1.4x APO Tele Converter, AF can operate between infnity and 0.67m. If the subject is closer than 0.67m, only MF is available. Focuses well enough, but not quite 'ultimate performance' as I wasn't able to catch running gazelles or wildebeests running to or from me too well. It auto focuses much slower when you engage the manual focus ring as well. If you slid the focus rind forward so manual focus is disengaged, it's much faster.

Thailand and Vietnam have been the manufacturing hubs of AP South for many years. Many companies identified strategic risk in China and moved essential production facilities there many years ago. Sigma uses its HSM technology for autofocus on its Sigma-, Nikon- and Canon-mount versions of this lens; Pentax and Sony users are limited to mechanical focusing strategies. A full focus movement (infinity - close-focus - infinity) took about 1.5 seconds, though the lens is quite ''snappy'' when focusing between short distances. The HSM-variants of this lens allow the focus to be adjusted at any time by just turning the focus ring; as well, the lens is near-silent during focus operations. like how they only used four screws to attach the z-mount lens mount to the camera body, while the other brands used five or six screws? What if the world were not seen by everyone as a brand war? I understand it may he difficult to understand for you but try making the intellectual effort of imagining that some photographers assess equipment based on the value it brings to photographers compared to other available options. And not based on the logo. The last mount Sony abandoned was the A mount which lived more than 30 years from 1985 to 2016-2021 depending on how you want to figure the end date. Considering a given generation of build technology and similar image quality the longer the lens the smaller the gap of weight btwn a x-y mm zoom and a y mm prime. Both rings rotate very smoothly, although the zoom ring takes a bit of effort to turn (almost requiring your whole hand). I found the zoom ring a bit awkward to rotate if you are hand holding the lens, particularly with the tripod foot attached, as you tend to rest your hand under the tripod foot, and it takes some oomph to rotate the zoom ring. The focus ring, however, is buttery smooth and easy to turn. The focus ring will rotate all the way around the lens and has soft stops at close and infinity distances. The zoom ring turns less than 90 degrees.

Nikon's F-mount underwent several iterations with limited inter-compatibility. Pre-Ai, Ai, AF, AF-D, AF-I, AF-S, AF-P. And now, the entirely different Z mount. Nothing prior to AF-S can autofocus on their mirrorless cameras even with an adapter.

Realistically this lens will weight 2kg, have a great image quality and focus fast. None of the comments I have seen dispute any of that, do they? Nobody is questioning your brand of choice ability to design great lenses. The most frustrating thing I experienced was an incredible bird in the middle of a field. Out of about 10 shots, only two maybe three had critical focus. I couldn't understand what was going on. Happened a few times; mostly with birds. Here's the best of the series: With 1.4x APO Tele Converter, AF can operate between infnity and 0.45m. If the subject is closer than 0.45m, only MF is available. pros will already own a 1.4x, but nikon forces them to also buy the internal tc, because they don't offer an alternative with no internal tc. Thought i would share this with you. I have had the sigma 300mm f2.8 in the service center 3 times now. finally with a new chip that the dealer here can reprogram it is really giving me shaaaarp images. If you buy this lens i highly recommend you get it calibrated with your camera and the new chip installed. A world of difference for me. I am so amazed at the images at 2.8, wide open It is just incredible. Now i cannot tell the difference in wide open and stopped down. And i am a crop every image heavily. Also i had to quit using the sigma 1.4 and 2.0 t.c.. It degrades the images fo much for me.
