About this deal

A journal for the conscious, critical researcher who is ready to dig a bit deeper into their own work. We are a product of all of our millions of experiences in life. However, trauma is a lifelong journey and it will impact women in different ways throughout the lifespan. A push to be more critical of mental health professionals; to trust yourself when it comes to your emotions. There are great experts in mental health, but just because one has a title of psychiatry doesn’t mean one’s part of the good ones.

Knox, Kirsty Blake (26 March 2022). "Britney was called crazy but men have done much worse". Irish Independent . Retrieved 29 April 2022. Here's the thing: the idea that psychiatry as a patriarchal institution that is actively misogynist - and is also andro- and Eurocentric - is not novel. This is a not a new premise and this book offers no new insights. It is, however, presented by the author as somehow revolutionary. Taylor is not the first to put these concepts together, but her writing style is provocative and inflammatory ... and I really enjoy it. Her prose is charged and effective. Jessica Eaton – Individual Award Nominee – 2018". emmahumphreys.org. 19 January 2019 . Retrieved 10 July 2020. In 2022, Taylor published her second book, Sexy But Psycho: Uncovering the Labelling of Women and Girls through Constable. She described it as ”mixture of academic research, history, psychology and real-life stories of women and girls who have been told that they are mentally ill, instead of being listened to”. [19] The book focuses on how mental illness has historically been used to discredit women, focusing especially on the 2000s and pop artist Britney Spears. [20]The plural of anecdote is not data, and “challenging to read” =/= radical truth. Knowing those two things, the bulk of Sexy but Psycho’s worth is already nullified. She has also failed to convince me that there are no cases in which medical intervention is helpful or necessary; ironically, I could provide plenty of anecdotes which would fully support their use. Her failure lies in the fact that these statements, while being the logical conclusions of her arguments, are also entirely outside of the scope of this book, which was overambitious and under-researched, drawing laughable conclusions from valid questions, the worst kind of pop psychology.

Jessica Eaton School of Psychology Doctoral Researcher". birmingham.ac.uk . Retrieved 11 July 2020.Don't abuse the trust of traumatized women to sell a book about how much the psychiatric system traumatizes women. You'd think that'd be an incredibly simple no-brainer, and yet. Taylor began volunteering with domestic violence victims before deciding to earn her Bachelor of Science Hons degree in psychology from the Open University. [4] Upon receiving her degree, Taylor co-founded The Eaton Foundation, a Male Mental Health and Wellbeing Centre in the UK, with Alex Eaton. [5] She eventually quit her job and founded VictimFocus, which she describes as "a company designed to challenge and change the victim blaming practices in social care, policing, mental health and support services all over the world." [6] In 2017 and 2018, she was shortlisted for the Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize. [7] [8] Trans-erasure. Why? Like, really, why? Not only did the erasure (sometimes even blatant denial) of trans experiences weaken her argument, but more importantly, it was unethical, angering, and very unfeminist. Was really close to giving it 1* just for this.

I am still confused/troubled though. The acquaintances I have who have been through the medicalisation of serious mental health issues are, unsurprisingly, very difficult people to spend time with. It feels like a complicated intractable problem. a b "Championing a 'VictimFocus' World with Jessica Eaton". onestopsocial.co.uk. 16 January 2019. Archived from the original on 11 July 2020 . Retrieved 10 July 2020. Women are not responsible for being victims of sexual assault, rape or domestic violence. They do not need to learn how to not date shit men. Men need to not be shit. Taylor grew up in a council estate in Stoke-on-Trent. [3] She said that she was repeatedly sexually and physically abused as a teenager by men in her town, which she kept hidden from her family. As the result of her repeated rapes, Taylor gave birth to her first child at the age of 17 and reported her abuse to the police. The inclusion of personal stories; they are weaved in very interestingly into the narrative (albeit sometimes quite repetitive). Statistics are great, but they dehumanise. This is not a topic you want to dehumanise.
