About this deal

The Seiko 5 is often venerated among watch enthusiasts and collectors alike. It’s said to be the gateway into the world of mechanical watches. And while I don’t consider myself a watch guy, I’ve owned this watch for 6+ years now. In fact, this Seiko 5 was my first automatic watch.

My summer style is quite minimal, but you’ll always find me with a watch on my wrist, usually with some sort of canvas or nato strap. The SNK803’s default beige strap is quite hideous when paired with the beige dial in my opinion, it just looks washed out and bland overall. But the magic is in the style swap. Swap it with a brown leather strap for a more classy aesthetic. Or you can throw a light olive, leather nato strap on it for some subtle contrast, keeping an earth tone vibe. This Luminox watch runs on the SW220-1 automatic calibre. This is one of the most ubiquitous movements in the market, with a solid 38-hour power supply. I love the minimal nature of the dial. It comes in at 37mm, which is flattering for more modest wrists like mine. 2) Day-Date Complication Seiko provided a great base and their newer movement swapped right in with minimal modification. I learned a lot in the process and will possibly look to do a proper Mil Spec version in the future. Show me your SNKs, WUS! That being said, I like that the Seiko 5 plays a big role in Seiko’s history, and Seiko is world-renowned as a reputable watchmaker that crafts quality timepieces that are worn by young and old, rich and poor alike. It’s a point of pride when you can wear a timepiece that’s well respected and has a storied history well before you were born. The Seiko SNK803 makes for a lovely entry-level military watch choice. With its sturdy durability, casual style, and incredibly budget-friendly price, there seems to be a lot to love about this Seiko watch. As such, it is no surprise that the Seiko SNK803 has become one of the most popular go-to military watch options today. Without further ado, let us take a closer look at the Seiko SNK803 and everything it has to offer, to see if this famous military watch truly lives up to the hype. Specifications Case

As for the crown: It is an oem SNK crown, but I have chosen to not trim the NH36A's stem down quite as far. I could not find an option for sourcing a longer crown. I am unsure if this actually will make much of a difference with water resistance, as to begin with, the crown did not recess as close to the case as it could have. This leads me to believe the only actual waterproofing is the rubber gasket on the crown stem that is still in position to do its job as far as I can tell. Please comment if you have any insight to add here. Either way, I would never swim with this watch and wouldn't have to begin with. I may look in to pressure testing for education purposes. As I mentioned in the beginning, the Seiko 5 was my very first automatic watch and you know what they say about firsts—they’re never your last. Oh wait, you’ll never forget them, or something like that. THE BOTTOM LINE The Seiko SNK803’s sporty, casual look is finished off with a rugged beige canvas strap which wonderfully complements the watch’s dial. If you are not familiar with canvas straps, this type of strap is frequently paired with outdoor watches due to their portability, comfort, and most importantly, its waterproof capabilities. Straps made of nylon, fabric, and leather perform terribly when exposed to wet surfaces, which can result in damage to the strap. As such, canvas straps are a much more recommended alternative for field watches like the Seiko SNK803. Price After looking into the watch design, quality, features, and pricing this watch received a 8.5/10 from us at The Watch Blog. As mentioned before, Luminox is one of the best go-to brands when it comes to reliable military field watches. One top-notch model from the brand is the Luminox Atacama Adventurer Field Ref. XL.1761. Hailing from the Luminox Atacama Field collection, this is a robust field watch that shows off a very understated and sleek charm.Depending on the region, bracelet model and other features you may find this watch reference written as SNK803J, SNK803J1, SNK803J2, SNK803K, SNK803K1, SNK803K2, SNK803P, SNK803P1, SNK803P2, etc. The Seiko SNK803 is a mechanical automatic watch with movement-case reference 7S26-02J0. It houses the 7S26 caliber with 21 jewels, running at 21600 bph with an accuracy of +45/-35 seconds per day. It has a 41 hours power reserve, no hand-winding and no stop seconds hand function. Ref. Overall I’m a big fan of the whole SNK series, typically the SNK809 is the most popular, however, I’d definitely consider going for this model next. The 7S26 automatic movement at the heart of the watch is a popular workhorse movement that’s favoured in the community. It’s a great timepiece that offers a good level of quality for a very reasonable price in my opinion. Another great Luminox watch is the Luminox Atacama Field Ref. XL.1901. As with the aforementioned Luminox Atacama Adventurer Field Ref. XL.1761, this timepiece is one of the most popular Luminox watches on the market. If I learned one thing about the watch community during my time on YouTube is that they love to hate on watches without any kind of heritage. New “ affordable luxury” fashion watches are labeled despicable. If it’s not Swiss made or from a brand with a storied history selling watches then they will bash it into the ground. And I can sort of see where they’re coming from. Additionally, the lume is quite luminous, but not overly bright. Andsince the Seiko 5 is a military-inspired field watch, with a military heritage, it makes sense that it would have alume that’s easily visible in the field, while not being distracting, like say a Timex Indiglo, for example.A silver chapter ring is placed around the centre of the dial, bearing bright red indicators for the 13th to 24th hours. Along with the watch’s vibrant red seconds hand, these red indicators are highly legible and serve to add a pop of colour to this monochrome watch face. The dial is also adorned with tritium gas tubes that serve as hour markers. These tritium gas tubes will light up in the dark, allowing wearers to read the watch’s face even at night. The Seiko SNK803, however, stands out from its peers by utilising a watch case that is considerably smaller than the standard for field watches. The Seiko SNK803 is presented in a 37mm stainless steel case. This is quite a slender case size even today. As such, the Seiko SNK803 is actually best suited for men with smaller-to-average-sized wrists, or for women, who have slimmer wrists. Its smaller size means that the Seiko SNK803 is also much less heavy than the average field watch, so you can easily tote this piece around all day as a companion to your daily routines. This Luminox watch is driven by a quartz Ronda 6004.D Calibre. This reliable quartz movement has a battery life of about 40 months.

Yes, these SNKs and other Seiko 5s do offer a great opportunity for some spiffy "minimalist" mods on the cheap. The Seiko 5 comes with a classic day-date complication that’s easy to read and doesn’t add any clutter, which is quite a feat. 3) Matte Finish Bezel This is an affordable watch that isn’t really designed for water wear and as such has a relatively basic water resistance rating. A 30m or 3 bar rating makes this watch suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, water related work and fishing. When it comes to field watches, Luminox and Victorinox are some of the best brands to start with. However, while they do dominate the field watch market, there are some top-notch military watches that can be found under brands too. One great example would be Seiko’s SNK803.
