About this deal

When you sand, you’re scraping away material from the surface to remove imperfections or to shape and contour edges. The goal is to start with the sandpaper that’s just coarse enough to remove the worst defects easily. Starting with sandpaper that’s too coarse will mean extra sanding later with finer-grit papers to remove the deep scratches left by the coarse grit. On the other hand, if you start with sandpaper that’s too fine, it’ll take forever to sand out defects. In most cases, 80-grit paper is a good starting point for sanding planed or shaped wood. Start with 100-grit if the wood is already smooth with no deep scratches, planer marks or other surface defects. The sanding wheels can be shaped to the required profile by running them against a high density hardwood strip cut to the desired profile with saw cuts spaced at approximately 20 mm intervals along the length. The prepared moulding is pressed forcefully against the rotating wheel, across successive saw cuts, until the negative profile has been completely ground into the edge of the wheel. Sample hardwood profiled mouldings should be retained from each production batch for shaping wheels required for future production. It’s worth noting that you can often attach your domestic vacuum hose to an electric sander, which almost eliminates the issue of dust. This is great for working on projects indoors. It’s not strictly necessary for any job, but a power sander can sure save a lot of time and sweat. A highly recommended power tool for this job is a random-orbit sander. Consider investing in one if you don’t already own a random-orbit sander. Wood comes in all kinds of densities and each of these densities sand down differently. When working with mixed wood types be mindful that less dense woods will abrade faster than denser woods.

Take your time when sanding, and spend the few extra minutes with the coarse grit to really get your wood project in the best possible place before moving up to the next grit. Although abrasive wheels can be fitted to air operated machines and used by hand, the best results are obtained on through feed machines fitted with a swivel head with both vertical and horizontal adjustment to take up the wear on the wheel. Head speeds up to 1500 rpm are acceptable for wheel diameters up to 200 mm when using power feed machines. No matter what type of edge you’re going for, always maintain steady pressure and sand with, not against, the grain. Don’t employ sandpaper to remove things like pencil marks or dried glue, but do use it to smooth joints or filled nail holes.

Now what to do for reaching the grooves? You can use multiple products in this case. Steel wool, sanding file or handmade sanders, etc. for details can be used here. This also means that the Festool LS 130 removes material more slowly than what you’re used to from a random orbit sander. With detail sanding, this is a benefit since I don’t want to take off too much material from a profile at once. Even though it sands more slowly than a random orbit sander, it’s still much faster than hand sanding. Sanding doors can create a lot of dust, so removing the door from its hinges and taking it outside to work on can be beneficial. Removing the door also means you can lay it on a flat surface. A firm sanding head suitable for general sanding. Replacement abrasives can be simply clipped in place making it economical to use. Another commercially available sanding accessory is a sanding mop, which is essentially a bundle of narrow strips of sandpaper attached to a mandrel for mounting in your drill press (Photo 2). As you hold your workpiece against the mop, the abrasive strips conform to the profile, smoothing it without altering the piece’s shape. If you just want to sand away a little bit of material or prepare an item for the next stage of a DIY project, 80 to 120-grit sanding paper should be suitable. Using this type of sandpaper will even out any irregularities and get rid of any traces of coarse sanding. Don’t worry if you can’t remove the door. Protect the immediate area with dust sheets and get yourself a dust mask and eye protection. It becomes very satisfying to see the fruits of your labor, whether before or after assembly, to smooth out those uneven wood surfaces and prepare them for the finish you’ve chosen.

Therefore, fine (higher grit) sandpaper is ideal and you don’t need to apply a huge amount of pressure.Angle Grinders. Yes, we know that these are rather aggressive at removing material But, with extra care and a well-chosen grinder head, an angle grinder can be effective in reaching otherwise obscure spots on a workpiece. Angle grinders are designed to remove materials from a workpiece, and isn’t that what sanding is all about? However, they come at a cost. Curves take more time to cut than straight lines, and smoothing them demands a certain finesse. In fact, if not faired properly, curves can make a piece look worse rather than better. The last thing you want are bumps, humps, and other irregularities marring the otherwise elegant sweep of a leg or table edge. And, of course, curves must be clean and smooth as well as fair, without scratches, scorches, or machine marks calling attention to themselves.
