About this deal

Alcohol can be added to skincare to preserve or stabilize the formula. Greenfield recommends avoiding it as much as you can, explaining that formulas with alcohol “can end up drying out your skin rather than hydrating it.” We love the Paula's Choice Hyaluronic Acid Booster with Ceramides, which is not only alcohol-free, but contains a blend ceramides to enhance the formula’s soothing nature. Additional Ingredients The serum promises softer, firmer skin, and we did experience those benefits. In fact, plumping was one of the biggest benefits we noticed. We saw a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles but an increase in fullness. After using this serum regularly, our skin looked healthier and more glowy. Nolan A, Badminton J, Maguire J, Seymour RA. The efficacy of topical hyaluronic acid in the management of oral lichen planus. J Oral Pathol Med 2009;38(3):299-303. View abstract. From the drugstore aisle, we’re loving Cerave’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum. It contains pure hyaluronic acid, plus vitamin B5 and three essential ceramides that work in tandem to hydrate, repair the skin’s barrier, and soften the entire face. While testing, we appreciated how promptly the formula absorbed into the skin (it took around 60 seconds) and it provided instant hydration. We found it to be very soothing and refreshing, plus we loved the fact that it didn’t sit atop the skin but rather seeped deep into our pores. Over the course of the testing period, our skin felt more hydrated overall (a huge win), with a huge difference in the softness of the previously dull and dry areas on our faces. Our T-zones never felt too oily, rather the serum provided a supple, glossy feel that proved to be a great base for both skincare and makeup. The only thing we wish we could change is that the bottle is a bit small; a larger bottle would last longer. But when you consider the price and accessibility (you can find it in any drugstore, no matter where you are), it can’t be beaten.

You may have heard a lot in recent years about hyaluronic acid (HA), the wonder ingredient that has found its way into seemingly everything from face creams and foundations to shampoos and eyelash treatments. A brilliant hydrator, hyaluronic acid helps to plump up and retain moisture in the skin, smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles and giving skin a younger, fresher feel. Laurent, T. C., Dahl, I. Although hyaluronic acid works for all skin types, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nava Greenfield recommends considering your skin type to find the one that suits your needs best. For example, if you have oily skin, she explains, you’ll want to look for a water-based product. We recommend the La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum for this. If you have dry skin, she says, try an oil- or cream-based serum for optimal hydration. The Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Glow Serum is one of our favorites for very dry skin. Published 2009 Nov 3. doi:10.2147/ppa.s3183Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that naturally exists in the skin,” explains Claire Wolinsky, MD. “When a hyaluronic acid serum is applied to the skin, it can attract and hold water, leading to a plumping and hydrating effect.” While HA doesn’t directly stop signs of aging, the plumping effect can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. And no matter your skin type, she adds, regular use of a hyaluronic acid serum can lead to an appearance of “healthier, dewier skin.” Skin Texture: We took detailed notes about what our skin texture was like before we used each serum, and recorded how the products interacted with our skin. Did the serum cause any irritation? Did it have a plumping effect or smooth lines and wrinkles? We also recorded how our skin texture changed after the eight-week testing period.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the fluids in the eyes and joints. It acts as a cushion and lubricant in the joints and other tissues.

Almost as important is what the serum doesn’t contain: there’s no synthetic fragrance, colour, alcohol or silicone to irritate or further dry out already dry skin. A couple of pumps of B-Hydra each day will help skin feel refreshed and comfortable as well as looking moist and dewy. So we all know hyaluronic acid to be the MVP of skincare—or, at least, that’s what you’ve read/heard/seen in every single article, commercial, and product description for the past year, right? (We get it, hyaluronic acid—YOU’RE POPULAR.) And although, yes, this little ingredient is usually the key to plump, glowing skin, it still needs to be used correctly or it could make your face sincerely unhappy. So if you have officially reached peak levels of confusion about WTF hyaluronic acid even is and how to use it, please allow myself and the experts to explain everything you need to know about hyaluronic acid for skin and the correct way to use it in your skincare routine. Meet the experts: Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Glow Serum: It’s impossible to discuss products for dry skin without mentioning the Water Drench collection from Peter Thomas Roth. It gave our skin a nice glow and even improved some wrinkles, but we couldn’t tell a huge difference in the moisture levels of our skin. For a serum that’s supposed to increase moisture, we were surprised it didn’t live up to the hype, but it could work nicely for those looking for an anti-aging serum. Even active ingredients that don’t always mix well with others, such as vitamin C and retinol, play nicely with hyaluronic acid. You can use them in the same routine, and hyaluronic acid can even counterbalance any sensitivity or dryness caused by certain active ingredients. The Mad Hippie serum contains quite a few antioxidants along with hyaluronic acid to combine brightening and hydrating benefits. Absorption: After applying each product, we took note of how long it took to absorb into our skin and whether it left behind any greasy residue. We also noted whether or not we could feel the product on our skin once it was fully absorbed. If we applied any skin products immediately before or after use, we took note of any interactions that occurred. This serum is a good choice if you’re looking for anti-aging benefits, says Dr. Yadav, since it contains a blend of peptides that promotes collagen production and provides a plumping effect.

Currently, there are no known negative reactions to any specific ingredients being used together with hyaluronic acid. However, Greenfield advises against using any hyaluronic acid serums that contain alcohol (since they can be drying) or any other ingredients that typically irritate your skin or cause you to have an allergic reaction. Upon arrival, a signature will be required to confirm receipt. This service offers peace of mind and a secure way to receive your products. Humbert P, Mikosinki J, Benchikhi H, Allaert FA. Greenfield says that because hyaluronic acid is so light and versatile, you can apply a serum with it pretty much whenever you please. “I love applying hyaluronic acid post-procedure, as a part of my morning antioxidant serum, or after applying retinoids at night,” she says.
