About this deal

When choosing an electric toothbrush, the most important factor to consider is its effectiveness at removing plaque. The difference is sometimes small, but the brush heads' design, the motor's power, and the type of movement (oscillating or sonic vibration) can all have an effect. The most powerful or fastest vibrating/oscillating brush isn't necessarily the best, though, particularly for people with sensitive gums. If that's you, for a brush with a 'gentle' mode, which will dial down the intensity. iO Series brushes offer a different brushing sensation to other Oral-B models and truthfully, it is much more pleasant. Oscillating toothbrushes feature rotating and pulsating round brush heads that can rotate up to ~8,000 times per minute, depending on the model. While they're slower in this department, oscillating toothbrushes benefit from the rotating head, which is fantastic for fighting plaque.

Unlike the Oral-B iO Series 9, the iO Series 6 has a regular charging base with a prong that fits into a recess in the handle (Image credit: Future)Once you're done, turn off the brush and you'll be given a rating for your efforts. It doesn't matter if you end up taking longer than the typical two minutes to complete a thorough clean, but you'll lose points for not completing every part of your mouth, rushing, or applying excessive pressure. It's an impressive system, and will help you get a better idea of how good brushing should feel so you can adapt your habits on days when you choose not to use the app. Choosing a new electric toothbrush and ditching the manual? The Oral-B iO series is a great buy if money's no object, but the best value options are often squarely in the middle of the range, such as Oral-B's Genius X AI brush, which tends to run a little cheaper. Passionate about business and helping others, Jon has been involved in various online enterprises since the early 2000s. Sonic toothbrushes are engineered to vibrate the brush filaments from side to side, and often resemble manual brushes with oval or diamond-shaped heads. These brushes are capable of vibrating up to ~40,000 per minute, depending on the model –meaning they move more rapidly than oscillating toothbrushes. Powerful vibrations force toothpaste and fluid between the teeth, granting a more comprehensive clean.

If the Oral-B iO Series 9 is a little beyond your budget, this is an excellent alternative. The Oral-B iO Series 6 is essentially the same as the top-end brush but with a lower price tag, thanks to fewer fancy accessories. The Oclean X Pro Elite is the quietest electric toothbrush we've tested. In fact, when you close your mouth, it's barely audible – but don't let that fool you. This is still a powerful sonic toothbrush that delivers thorough cleaning on par with much more expensive brushes. We test each electric toothbrush by using it twice a day for two weeks, brushing for two minutes morning and night, then using a disclosing tablet at the end of weeks one and two. Disclosing tablets help to reveal how much plaque remains on our teeth after our final brushing session by coating your teeth with a harmless dye. If the toothbrush has a smartphone app, then we use that to guide our brushing.

Noise is another consideration that's easy to overlook and tends to correlate with price; a cheap electric toothbrush might be effective, but paying more will get you a higher-end motor that won't wake a sleeping partner in the morning. Is a sonic or oscillating toothbrush better? Oral-B’s iO range represents a big change for the brand. There’s an all-new design and an improved brushing system. But most models also come with a hefty price tag and tons of features you can happily live without. One of the biggest improvements you can make to your oral health routine is the time you brush for.

Brushing for the recommended minimum of 2 minutes twice a day achieves maximum plaque removal. Yet many people brush for as little as 45-70 seconds per day. In comparing the NiMH and Lithium-Ion batteries – which type will have the longer life (as opposed to which will hold a charge longer)? Since this is most likely what will determine the life of the whole unit, it seems like an important consideration. The Pro 1000 is a good electric toothbrush, but the Smart 1500 is the more capable brush and the one better suited to new or experienced electric toothbrush users. In the sections below we compare Oral-B brushes that are close to each other in price and features. Smart 1500 vs Pro 1000 It's well designed, too. A bright touchscreen display built into the brush handle allows you to choose from various modes and intensity settings, with a timer that counts down as you brush. It works surprisingly well with wet hands and is more intuitive than pushing a series of physical buttons. All system components (e.g., toothbrush handle, charger, power cord, SmartGuide). You do not need to include accessories like the brush heads or refill stand. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the icons are not all that logical with multiple icons lit for specific modes. The X Pro Elite is an excellent brush by itself (it really is astonishingly quiet). But, in our opinion, it's best when used without its 'smart' functionality.
