In PASM modes both the Command dial and multi-selector wheel are used to change the appropriate exposure control; the command dial engages program shift in Program auto and the shutter speed in Shutter priority and Manual modes. The multi selector wheel is allocated to the aperture in Aperture priority and Manual modes. So far, so straightforward, but it’s a bit of a shame the redundant dial is just that – the command dial is disabled in Aperture priority mode, likewise the Multi selector wheel in Shutter priority mode. Both the continuous H and L modes record at full 18 megapixel resolution, with the 60 fps restricted to 2 megapixels and the 120 fps mode limited to VGA size.

The COOLPIX P520 has two full resolution continuous shooting modes; Continuous L shoots a burst of up to 30 frames at about 1fps and Continuous H shoots a one-second burst of 7 frames at, that’s right, 7fps. There are also some novel continuous shooting options that use a pre-shooting cache to capture a sequence including images recorded before you press the shutter release. The pre-shooting cache starts recording when you half-press the shutter release for half a second or more and captures a total of up to 20 frames included 5 pre cached frames at around 15fps. The COOLPIX P520 doesn’t offer particularly fast continuous shooting or extended bursts, if the action lasts any longer than a second you won’t be able to capture at full resolution. But it does offer a wide range of reduced resolution burst modes as well as some novel and versatile ones. If you want fast continuous shooting at full resolution, neither the PowerShot SX50 HS nor the Lumix FZ70 / FZ72 does better, for that a better option would be something like the Canon PowerShot S120 or G16, or of course a mid-range DSLR. But the COOLPIX P520 does at least offer some other options. Here, I’ve compared the COOLPIX P530 with the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS, which shares the same 42x zoom range, 16 Megapixel resolution and a lot of other features besides. I’ve also tested it alongside Sony’s Cyber-shot H400 which has a massive 63.3x zoom in a slightly larger, heavier body. Like most high-end superzooms, the Nikon P520 sports the typical bridge camera look, with a chunky hand-grip, large lens barrel, pop-up flash and an eye-level electronic viewfinder. The deep grip is moulded to fit comfortably into your right hand, and is rubberised in a textured material for added comfort. Autofocus was lethargic, taking at least half a second, and up to three seconds in low light or at the long end of the zoom. Even in favourable conditions with a bright, nearby subject, it only managed to capture a photo every 2.9 seconds. After zooming right in, we measured an average of 3.7 seconds. Anything above a second is disappointing, especially for a bridge camera that’s likely to be pointed at fleeting subjects.
