The Nikon COOLPIX L840 is a super-zoom with a 38x optical zoom lens and a 16 Megapixel CMOS sensor. Launched in February 2015, it’s an update to the hugely popular COOLPIX L830 which was launched a year earlier and remains in the COOLPIX line-up for now. The new model extends the zoom range from 34x to 38x with all of the extra zoom power at the telephoto end providing an equivalent range of 22.5mm to 855mm. Whether the flash is set to standard Auto mode or Auto with red-eye reduction, the camera successfully avoids any trace of red-eye. Competition in the budget bridge camera sector is strong, and with rivals like the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ40 sporting even more zoom range for less or similar money, the L840 does seem a little overpriced.

Whilst the L840 may look a bit like a DSLR from the outside, inside is a tiny 1/2.3” image sensor just like you’d find in most compact cameras. As a result, image quality is no better than a camera a fraction of the size, but that’s not to say the L840 performs badly. Digital Filters - The L840 has eight filter effects which preview live and are recorded at full resolution. They are: Soft, Nostalgic sepia, High-contrast monochrome, Selective color (choose from 12 colour options), Pop, Cross process, Toy camera effect 1, Toy camera effect 2 and Mirror. There’s also an Easy Panorama mode for automatic 180° or 360° pans, however the final stitched images are only 920 vertical pixels high.

But the most notable new addition to the L840 is its Wi-Fi connectivity for remote camera control and wireless image sharing with a smartphone or tablet. NFC pairing is also present, making it a doddle to set up a wireless connection with an NFC-enabled smart device. What’s more, the L840 only just gives you more optical zoom than a superzoom compact camera like the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS. This offers a 30x zoom reach but is far more portable than the L840 and currently costs less. Factor the L840’s requirement for additional AA batteries and it makes even less financial sense. White Balance Performance -Auto white balance performs well under both tungsten and fluorescent lighting and the camera consistently produces a neutral colour balance. The same can’t be said for the manual fluorescent preset which leaves an obvious colour cast, though the tungsten preset is much better.

The pop-up flash on the L840 has four settings: Auto, Auto with red-eye reduction, Fill flash & Slow sync. Shooting a white surface from a distance of 1.5m shows the flash provides even illumination with the lens zoomed in, though some minor vignetting is visible in the wide-angle shot. The Coolpix L840 has a 3-inch LCD display, providing a clear and convenient preview of the captured photos or videos. It is powered by AA batteries, which are easily accessible and convenient for travel or extended shooting sessions. The COOLPIX L840 offers a choice of five AF area modes, more than is usual for a camera in this class, though there’s no manual focus option as on the PowerShot SX530 HS. Face priority works well when people are within a few metres of the camera in good light. If there are no faces in the frame it defaults to the nine-area AF system which it uses to focus on the subject closest to the camera. Alternatively you can manually select the focus area from one of 99 positions using the multi-selector to move the frame around a 9×11 grid, or set a central focus point. Manual positioning of the AF area is not something you’ll find on either of the Canon models and, while it’s not something you might make frequent use of, there are occasions, like when shooting with the camera on a tripod or for macro shots, when it can be very useful. There are few flaws with the L840’s 38 zoom lens though. Only a hint of barrel distortion is visible when shooting geometric subjects at maximum wide angle and there’s no noticeable pincushion effect when zoomed in. Corner sharpness is also respectable, however chromatic aberration (purple fringing) is easily visible around areas of high contrast.Nikon still hasn’t added an electronic viewfinder, but the L840’s 3” LCD monitor has a high 921k-dot resolution and wide viewing angles. It’s also tiltable up or down by 90° for easier high or low-angle shot composition, though it can’t be rotated 180° for selfie snapping.
