About this deal

Amazingly—to me, at least—it has worked really well. Any skepticism I harbored about whether people would really work as hard and as well in a domestic environment has been shattered. Surely this will continue with benefits to family life, avoidance of commuting stress, the economics of publishing, and trust and empowerment of publishing employees But some things will never—or never should—be the same again. While I’m absolutely certain others that others will have their own—and probably better—ideas, here’s my list of irreversible changes in our industry. In Publishing’s Post-Pandemic Future The post-COVID-19 launch parties will be digital. Many more people can and will attend. The wine and refreshments will be top-notch. The author can be heard and seen. The event can be recorded and shared universally.

I read this last week and couldn’t put it down! It so mirrors what was happening in libraries and publishing in the 70s, 80s. 90s, my lifetime, etc! In fact I am going to read it again! A wonderfully personal history! Katina Strauch This book spans 50 years of British publishing, and makes them all interesting. Richard Charkin never minded stirring the pot, and clearly he is still at it. He offers a tour of the publishers where he worked, of the industry, and of the many colorful characters he came across. From Lord Archer to Harry Potter, all the stories are here, and they are told with flair in Richard's signature voice. I loved it!" John Sargent, former CEO of Macmillan USA I have worked in publishing for most of my adult career (30+ years), but all on the editorial side and never gave much thought to the business side. That might be as inconceivable to you as it is to me (after having read your book). And loved reading about Mensch Publishing (love the name, the concept, and the “mission statement”). My friends and I have a tradition of giving a “mensch rating” to the partners that our various children bring home. Anyway, thank you so much for this book and for all your work and knowledge. All best with sales and distribution. I see you have an event tonight and wish I were in London to attend it. However, I WILL be in London for a few days in the fall (I think it’s early Nov) and would love to meet you if you’re around. His experiences of phenomena such as Harry Potter will no doubt be of great interest, but his knowledge of the social and technological shifts in the industry also make this one for writers, insiders and anyone considering a career in publishing. So my resolutions this year relate to improving publishing by measuring things other than those I’ve mentioned above. The 2022 Audit Wish ListWould anyone buy it? I could envisage all this work ending up with a half-dozen copies moldering in some mid-Western university library vault and my publisher wishing he’d never heard of the book. Authors frequently think it’s exclusively the job of the publisher to make a book sell. Not so. The author is frequently best placed to think up plans for sales, for promotional ideas, and indeed for implementation in cahoots and with the support of the publisher. It will still be blended learning but as in any blend everything depends on the proportions of the ingredients. In education, these proportions will never be the same again. It might seem strange that a publisher would embark on such a project without a contract or at least an idea of who might publish it. I was relieved of any decision-making by one of my “referees,” Francis Bennett of Marble Hill Publishers, who—rather than critiquing the book—offered to publish it.

This biographical article is written like a résumé. Please help improve it by revising it to be neutral and encyclopedic. ( March 2015)Print in the new world is akin to the old French tradition of delivering the mail by postmen on stilts—charming but ridiculous. This is a really important book that I am certain will be read for years to come by anyone who has any interest in books and publishing. He once told me that he was a lousy manager because, as an academic, he had never had anyone reporting to him and he never reported to anyone. The facts were true but his conclusion was wrong. He was a great manager with humanity, judgment, humility, intellect, and courage that I fear the Harvard Business School simply cannot teach. I only wish that political leaders around the world were as quiet and effective. Digital distribution of ebooks, audiobooks, and any other yet-to-be-invented formats has greatly facilitated worldwide distribution and logistics, further reinforcing the possibility of a single publisher license from the author.

However, perhaps there’s another question we should ask: What is the point of establishing separate territorial rights for English-language titles? Let’s ask why the system exists in the first place. ‘The World Has Changed and Will Change Even Faster’ A view of Puycelsi in the south of France, a hilltop village, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France association municipalities. Image: Richard Charkin Another of Charkin’s editorial accomplishments had an even bigger cultural effect. He is proud of the colossal task of digitalising the Oxford English Dictionary in 1988, which involved blending 10 editions from the early 1900s and later supplementary additions. One of the purposes of the business, apart from keeping me occupied and testing out some of my publishing theories, was for me to relearn the business at the micro level. So what have I learned and which of my prejudices have been confirmed or undermined? Complexity and Tight Margins This will be reversed and will become a digital course supplemented by a teacher and the very occasional printed textbook. With more people working from home, how can our industry justify typical midtown offices? How can senior executives justify large offices for themselves and battery-hen cubicles for lower-level staffers?
