It has had a wonderfully diverse history, having survived through two world wars as well as prohibition, when it stopped functioning for 41 years. The nose opens with well-rounded notes of sherry and dried fruit. There is a tang and zest here that really piques interest early.

Opened this with a friend and we could barely hold a conversation as each time one of us took a sip we had to stop to say how good it was. Whisky under the Ledaig brand is peated single malt by Tobermory distillery from the Isle of Mull in Scotland. The distillery founded in 1798, having undergone a number of periods of closure, was formerly known as Ledaig.A lot of other people I know identify and look forward to visiting a city or country after seeing it in a movie, or perhaps due to its tourist attractions. I don’t. I usually avoid the tourist attractions that draw tourists, which brings me to remember another Bourdain quote from a Parts Unknown episode. Essentially, he says he recognizes every place by its food. Me too, Tony. Me too. Food and booze help transport me to other places.

From the color of Ledaig 18 alone, it appears the finish is much deeper and longer than most sherry-finished Islay whiskies, as well, and here we really see the best of both worlds — smoky peat meeting sweet sherry. This year’s shortlist included a mix of whiskies from the Highlands to the island, showcasing some bold flavours including Jura 18 Year Old, which won the runner up prize, Old Pulteney 15 Year Old and Oban 14 Year old. After an expert panel carried out a blind tasting, Ledaig 18 Year Old was the winner. The palate is rich and full of fruit. There are dates, raisins and oranges, all with a nice chewy texture to them. Ledaig 18YO is a limited release. I sampled batch 2 which was sold in a stylish wooden case. They changed the appearance for batch 4. Let it breathe – take your time with it Powerful rich, sherried, herbal smoky flavours, orange peel, coffee, a touch of sea salt, tobacco and white pepper. Grassy notes, salt and lemons, as well as herbs and a floral top note. I expected more dark chocolate from the sherry, but it stays in the higher pitched flavours.
