Excerpt: Overall, this is an expression from JIm Beam to skip. Both the regular white label and the extra aged are better bourbons.

Jim Beam Double Oak is first aged in a newly charred American White Oak barrels. Then, we pour it into another freshly charred white oak barrel to mature for a second time. The added interaction with the oak results in a liquid intense in flavor and smooth in taste. If aging in a charred barrel makes for good drinking, then aging in TWO charred barrels must make for amazing drinking. Or at least, that’s the logic that brings us the Jim Beam Double Oak edition. Nice . I’m halfway through the bottle and it’s good. Traditional bourbon flavors: brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, and oak. Not complicated, but quality flavors.

Jim Beam® - Legacy and Craftsmanship of Our Bourbon Jim Beam® - Legacy and Craftsmanship of Our Bourbon

With Prohibition finally repealed in 1933, Jim Beam rebuilt his distillery by hand in Clermont, KY, with the help of friends and family. In 1935, the first batch was ready, and since he no longer owned the rights to the Old Tub name, he sold it as Colonel James B. Beam Bourbon. Finally, the man known as “The Colonel and The Legend” could celebrate. By the Civil War, bourbon was so popular that even General Ulysses S. Grant was a big fan. As legend has it, President Lincoln once said about him, “Find out what he drinks and send a case to my other generals.”The Double Oak is essentially the same whiskey as regular Jim Beam, but it has undergone an additional aging period in newly charred American oak barrels. It's beautifully smooth, easy on the palate with a warming gentle finish. In my review of the standard edition Jim Beam I mention that it’s too sweet and not rich enough to be useful in a mule. But with a second round in the charred oak barrels, there is a stronger flavor to the bourbon and it holds up much better against the ginger beer. Excerpt: It’s unique and certainly not bad, but rather one-dimensional. Then again, it might be just the thing around a fire pit on a chilly autumn night.

On the palate, the first sip brings warmth and prominent smoke, accompanied by a touch of oak char. Short, hot finish. For the low proof (86pf) this is way hotter than it should be and that heat comes without much character to help justify. The ice helps to mellow out harsh notes and reduce the heat, while also enhancing the sweetness and oak characteristics. Additionally, this is a great pouring bottle because of its firm, steady grip, which is important for bartenders. On top of that, the Double Oak is great value for money. Closing ThoughtsIts like the Double Oak had so much on top it couldn’t go down smooth and the edge outlasted the burn. Excerpt: Perhaps more ‘craft’ than the brand’s 12 yo 'Signature Craft'. A good surprise, I could sip this.
