I'll say that I didn't mind the love thing with the protagonist's best friend too much (certainly not as much as I worried I would after reading the review). Combat Clairvoyance: Her Third Eye ability lets her CAD predict the opponents move while she can't see it, and do something about it.

The Ace: She enters the school with a rank of C0 and an ability (Third Eye) already having manifested. According to Rama Guest, that hasn't happened at Galens in a very, very long time. She herself later states that with that at entry, she was in the top 50 new assignees in the galaxy. It was amazing! Watching the main cast grow and overcome their own fears and anxieties, while pushing themselves to be stronger and better than they were, was simply great. Not many books focus that much on the character development, rather they let the story and intrigue carry poor character design.Maybe also because it has widely varying results, I.E. the guy with the really long, thin sword who was mentioned once by the lasher)

This is the sort of deep analytical insight you only learn after extensive education and a long writing career. Renowned Selective Mentor: Because A-types are so rare, A-type instructors are difficult to find and expensive. Even a school like Galens doesn't have one specifically and A-types start training with the type their device most resembles at first. Can't Catch Up: He realizes he's this when it comes to Rei. He's jealous, but it doesn't affect him too much. This is a sci-fi setting, and whata setting. The authors had to have put in a truly staggering amount of work into making this world feel lived-in and complete. Because it really isn't. Each fight is tactical and crunchy, not to mention visually spectacular, but almost all the battles alsoteach you something about the combat system and the world, have high emotional stakes for the main character, and advance the plot in some way.

Our main character (Rei) is a scrappy underdog who's incredibly, amazingly miserable childhood has given him an iron will and insane work ethic. He's also a genius. Unfortunately his crippled body has set him up for failure because in this universe where iron will, insane work ethic, and genius intellect are worth their weight in unobtanium, and physical weaknesses are trivially solved with fantastic technology and an insane work ethic... almost everyone judges each other immediately almost entirely based on physical strength?
