This is the third book in the Gallaghers of Ardmore trilogy and it wrapped everything up nicely. Throughout the series, we’ve seen the family pub as the center of everything. Aidan runs it, Darcy is the main server, Shawn has been the cook for years, but really he’s a songwriter who is about to sell his first song to a man who coincidentally wants to develop a theatre/concert hall right on Gallagher land. In this book, that man finally makes his way to Ireland. poverty and how underdevelopment, as well as tradition, propels them seaward. His wistful romanticism sometimes shadows hard realities. IMPORTANT UPDATE: The great reader in the sky has answered my prayers and made a movie based on this story - starring Chris Hemsworth - so I already count one ironclad reason to watch this. The trailer states that the Essex goes beyond the known world, which no it didn't, but I'm also fairly sure that Owen Chase's jaw wasn't nearly as square as Hemsworth's, so I'm willing to allow poetic license. Most people are familiar with Krakauer’s work, but this book stands out as a beautifully written tribute not just to human endurance and spirit, but to man’s folly. It’s a story of how the conquest of Mt. Everest, once the ultimate goal of highly experienced mountaineers, became over-commercialized, with deadly consequences.
