Control via the app is super-easy, but in those instances I haven't been bothered to access the app, I have been able to use Alexa. However, I have missed not having a power button somewhere on the light base itself. Having to find my phone to jump through a few hoops to toggle it off while I'm half asleep, or shout down to Alexa (which doesn't always register my command), isn't ideal. It's a minor flaw, but worth noting. Having used the similar but considerably less expensive Govee Lyra lamp, which ships in segments you have to assemble yourself, I was pleased to see the Signe arrives in one ready-to-go piece. That saves the hassle of having to put the thing together and makes for a sleeker look without any visible seams — both appreciated touches at this price point. Overall, it feels sturdy and not like it's liable to break if you happen to tip it over. With coloured settings, the Hue Gradient Signe naturally does not shine quite as brightly as with white tones, with which, by the way, no gradients can be created. At the standard setting of 2,700 Kelvin, Philips Hue indicates 1,800 lumens, at 4,000 Kelvin it is 2,550 lumens and thus a little bit more than its predecessor. But I am sure that the new Signe will shine colourfully in most cases. My review unit was the Philips Hue Signe table lamp in oak. During the testing period I set routines, explored the beautiful Hue scene gallery, and controlled the intensity of the light. My main quibble was that you can only control the lamp using the app, or by switching it off at the mains; there's no on / off on the unit itself. Read on to discover how I got on elsewhere. The Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp is similar to the Govee Lyra Floor Lamp, in that both are floor-standing lamps with gradient light strips in them. While the Govee options needed some assembling, and the finish wasn’t great, the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp comes pre-assembled in its box.
The next thing I was blown away by was the size; the floor lamp is really quite tall for a premium strip of LED, 57.4 inches. Otherwise, it has a tiny footprint of less than 4.5- inches, which guarantees it will fit in all but the tiniest of spaces. Indeed, it has a vastly smaller footprint than a conventional floor lamp, especially one with a tripod. I much preferred my Go to Sleep routine, which would turn on at 22:00. I loved walking across my landing to see a gentle glow of colored lightcoming from the bedroom.

Really, though, as anyone who has used/got any sort of Philips Hue lighting will know, this paperwork isn't really needed. To get this lamp working I simply plugged it in, opened the Philips Hue app on my smartphone, and then selected the add new lights option. Colour reproduction across the range is excellent. Some cheaper lights struggle with some colours, but not the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp. From red to yellow, and green to blue, this lamp is bright across the range.This is something that not only annoys me about the Gradient Signe, but also about many other products. Although the Play Lightbar and the HDMI Sync Box now have a power supply unit with three connectors, it is simply not powerful enough. In my opinion, a solution with USB-C would be really modern and flexible.

Unfortunately, this colour gradient is not particularly impressive in the table lamp and there is a reason for this: the individual segments of the small Gradient Signe are also around 12.5 centimetres long. But while the Ambiance Gradient Lightstrip is divided into 16 segments and the large Gradient Signe into 10 segments, the floor lamp has only four segments. Lastly, in terms of gripes, try as hard as I might I just couldn't get the Signe to look - at least in my opinion - at home in any of the rooms of my house. Maybe it was its proportions, or the fact that I don't have free corners in rooms with neutral white or off-white walls, or that it didn't really go with a lot of my furniture, but whatever it was I struggled to make room for it – and certainly so in a way that meant there wasn't a wire trailing too far across the carpet. But, the Gradient Signe just didn't seem to naturally fit in with my home's aesthetic, which doesn't lean toward clean white walls and open spaces that I feel this lamp most suits. I've either got colored, painted walls or patterned wallpaper (see image above showing the grasses wallpaper in my living room as an example). Being in the UK, I was sent the UK and EU version of the lamp (a US version is also available), which meant I had a UK and EU plug to switch between. The lamp arrived with the EU plug attached, but switching this to the UK plug was simply a matter of sliding the EU plug upwards to release, and replacing with the UK version. If you have a minimalist home with plenty of corners and walls that can benefit from colored, gradiated uplighting, then forget about it – this product is for you.
