About this deal

June 1st 1847 saw the opening of the station at Holmsley. It was located where the line met the A35, the main route from Christchurch to Southampton, and referred to (until 1894) as Christchurch Road. The trail passes along a disused railway line from Burley to Holmsley Tea Rooms which is in the old disused station. There are still a few remnants of the railway which are interesting features. Refreshments:The whole point of our walk was to visit The Old Station Tearooms in Holmsley, which is well worth a visit. Dogs aren’t allowed in the cafe, but there’s plenty of seating outside, with some undercover. For me and the business here, when we get to Mother's Day it means we have survived another year because the winter is quiet. Go through the gate and turn left then sharp left again to keep the Inclosure and old embankment on the left.

After enjoying a couple of hours at Christchurch front the weather started to deteriorate so we thought about where would be a good place to stop on the way home. The old station tea rooms at Holmsley was on the route home and we have always enjoyed stopping off here. Fantastic tea room normally, but at present they are building a bridge next door, so at times it has a contingent of the navvies therefrom using the tea room as their canteen, in their work clothes. I am absolutely committed to having the business open every day. I have always said you can't take any money if you are not open.

Facing three months of minimal trade, Mr Jensen scrapped plans for a refurbishment of the tea rooms. In 1907, Holmsley was the arrival point of Kaiser Willhein of Germany and his cabinet, to attend a conference with Major Stuart Wortley at Highcliffe Castle.

On the way out we were tempted by the amazing looking sweet treats and ended up buying a lemon meringue pie & banoffee pie to take away... with us. Unfortunately when I was eating the scone I pulled out a sizeable piece of plastic wrapping that had been baked into it. Service was excellent and friendly and the staff had to deal with the crowds who were sat outside now looking for indoor tables due to the heavy rain.We appreciate that you have enjoyed your visits in the past and that you consider our food to be excellent. You are not alone, as you saw on the 18th, we do get very busy. The 18th of June was Father’s Day, this is always in our top 5 busiest days of the year. Needless to say, many dads were getting treated to our excellent breakfasts.

Station Tea Rooms Holmsley Walking Routes – The Old Station Tea Rooms Holmsley

In the late 1800’s the eldest son of Queen Victoria, Prince Edward, frequently disembarked at Holmsley with his then mistress, Lillie Langtry, enroute to their exclusive residence in Bournemouth. There’s nothing more quintessentially English than to partake in a delicious cream tea. What’s more, the best way to celebrate a summer staycation in the New Forest is to devour one outdoors in a beautiful garden surrounded by birdsong. Continue for about 75 metres before turning left along another clear woodland path beneath large beech trees. Follow it for half a mile and go beneath two railway bridges. About 400 metres beyond the second bridge turn right along the road to Setthorns and Burley. After approx 500 metres turn right at the sign for Longslade View car park. The Old Station Tea Rooms at Holmsley has suffered significantly since the work started on replacing the nearby road bridge. We popped in for a cooked breakfast and what a delight. Gorgeous food, especially the sausage & bacon. The Walk:The walk ispretty flat and beautiful. As it’s part of the New Forest, you can change your walk at almost any point, to make it longer or shorter. In 1899 Robert Louis Stephenson, who was a local resident, cast Holmsley Station as ‘Browndean’ the fictional station in his novel ‘The Wrong Box’. After bringing it to the attention of the staff, we were told that it “must have been a piece of the bag of flour that fell in the batter this morning, I wondered where that went.” To allow the work to take place, the A35 has been closed in both directions, as has the C10, which runs underneath the main road, for months.
