Let’s cut to the chase: the 55A7GQ’s picture quality turns out to be hugely disappointing, especially as it arrives amid a generally upward trajectory for Hisense TVs. Switching down to standard-definition material with Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Blu-ray, we are reminded of last year’s Roku TV and its brilliance with upscaling from 1080p. Contrast clearly becomes even worse if you watch the 55A7GQ from even a slight angle.
Once you turn the lights down, more issues surrounding the FALD and LCD technology become apparent with more blooming noticeable around things like subtitles and bright objects like white spaceships against the darkness of space. It is possible to mitigate against some of these issues and making sure your viewing environment is suitable for this type of TV display will help. As a big-screen fitting for sports and movies, it also starts at a slightly cheaper asking price than the U7QF model it replaces. But does the more affordable price suggest the A7G is a downgrade on what came before? Design With its 20W speaker system, the A7G offers a soundstage that’s flat and not especially dynamic. Given its size, a decent soundbar is a must, but judged on its own merits it offers solid clarity with dialogue; a presentation that’s clear, crisp and pleasingly sharp but refrains from wondering into sibilant territory. The stand supports the TV well, just like it did on the older model, but it takes up a lot of space.
While the 55A7GQ is cheap for a 55-inch TV, this is definitely one of those times where a low price doesn’t automatically equate to great value.
