We would not suit each other at all you know,” said Oswald. “Enid would be a demanding sort of wife. She would not appreciate a husband who left her in the country while he pursued his career at court.”

Fenella Thane has been married to an ass. She’s been celibate for over two years, and unbeknownst to her, he’s been cheating and plans to replace her, requesting an almost unheard of divorce from the King. Afterward, as they lay entangled and depleted, Fen drifted off into a dream about a small wooden bridge she could not cross because a man had hold of her hand and would not let go. She frowned in her sleep until she recognized the ring on his finger bore her family crest of the Bernard bear, and then she relaxed. For some reason, she could not raise her eyes to his face, but she was content to let him lead her away from the bridge, toward an oak tree that stood on a hill.” Oswald thought briefly, that if Baron Vawdrey had ever had a daughter he would have made her life a misery, but he kept this to himself. “He did mellow a lot in recent years,” he said instead, diplomatically. Forgive me Linnet, I know how well-suited you and Mason are together. I flatter myself that I was one of the first to appreciate it.” He paused, considering his words. “Even two brothers can be cut from different cloths. I do not think that sort of life would suit me. I am set in my bachelor ways now. My career…my position at court are what consume my days.” Oswald's brother Roland irked me a little once or twice. I enjoyed seeing Mason and Linnet from book one in this. She waved a hand dismissively. “All that counts for naught if you have no close friend or confidante among their number.” Jealousy it seems is a trait that runs in the Vawdrey family. It can churn out some hilarious situations. Unfortunately Oswald’s POVs rarely occurred in the second half of the book. This story was a beautiful, a slow moving, character driven, no-big-drama kinda story. It was also a second chance of sorts as these two were betrothed as teens. (I think she was 15 and he 19.) Separated by unknown acts, but most certainly a battle where the H was wounded so badly he almost didn’t survive and he lost some of his memories.

As to that...” He shrugged. “I've always kept my own counsel, and never been much for sharing confidences.” Oswald smiled as he watched her fussily arrange Archie on her lap. “No doubt,” he agreed. He had a suspicion it was not Cuthbert she wanted to discuss with him. I’m also sad that this book didn’t have an epilogue. I’m glad we get glimpses of this couple in future books, but I still want more!Fenella is a great person, but she's sometimes a bit of a doormat. She has had problems with men not treating her very well and now she seems to think that she deserves it. She works hard to do well in her new life and make her husband proud, but she doesn't always succeed. The Vawdrey trilogy is Alice Coldbreath at her best, even if there are quite a few grammar and typo mistakes. The thing is that the story-telling and the interactions between Oswald and Fenella are so well-written and so engaging that I condone the presence of the grammatical mistakes. It is strange, though because on the other hand, the descriptions of the clothes, the food, the speech and codes of conduct of this period are extremely well-detailed.

I enjoyed all the court intrigue; Fenella being the sweet person is also being a catalyst (marching into court to demand Oswald be her champion) to motivate the other ladies…shy Mathilde, old maid Orla, and surly Lady Bess, to be bold and go after the men they wanted! Icing on the cake…when Fen has babes of her own with Oswald…another slap in the face to that scumbag weasel Ambrose.

You poor thing. It must be a lot to take in… Indeed, it’s a hard day when a wife finds herself usurped from her husband’s favor.” She gave a mournful sigh that didn’t quite conceal the gleam in her eye. “But indeed it’s true. Ambrose loves another. Even now he petitions the king at his winter court in Aphrany.” I liked Oswald in Her Baseborn Bridegroom and for most of this book. He made some mistakes with the heroine and hoped that he would make them right by the end. Then the main conflict happened and he just doubled down on his bad qualities. The resolution wasn't good enough to make up for it. Fenella,” he said, squeezing his eyes shut a moment. The poor woman was clearly worried he was overworking, while he was sat imagining her underneath him! It wasn’t like him. He wasn’t usually such a pig.

I truly hated the hero, his machinations, his personality and everything he said or did and although the heroine didn’t deserve to be treated the way she was, I can’t really muster much sympathy because she didn’t help herself at all. I met Oswald in Mason’s book and to be honest, I’m not too crazy to start reading his book, because he sounds so proper and boring! Lol. Linnet nodded, considering this. “Enid’s first marriage was a love-match so doubtless she would not understand a marriage of convenience. But there are many eligible ladies who would understand that sort of arrangement only too well.”

He wanted you just as happy,” said Mason surprising him. “It's true,” said his brother gruffly. “He spoke to Linnet of it at the end.” If you read Sebastian St. Cyr series, you must know Jarvis. Sure, he wasn’t as bad as Jarvis, because hello, this is a romance story, but you’ve got an idea 😘. Trust me, no one's more upset with this rating than I am. 😭 At the end of the day, there was just too much court politics and not enough romance for me. I also found it really difficult to connect with the characters this time. The only highlight of this story was seeing Mason and Linnet (MC's from the last book) again. Their kids were adorable! Also her personality was very bland and boring, much like the book. The story dragging filled with details about her daily life and her interactions and gossiping with other women. It really took a lot of effort to finish.
