Lanterns and Light‘, or previous incarnations of the annual Christmas event, has been running at Chester Zoo for over a decade now, with the family-friendly entertainment delivering a bigger and more enchanting spectacle year in, year out. Guy Greaves, Development Chef at The Botanist said, “The response we get to our signature hanging kebabs is amazing– it’s become something of a cult favourite.I hope that you had a fabulous night celebrating your friends birthday and I hope to welcome you again soon. So, given the success of last year’s celebrations, the legendary local zoo had quite the job on their hands topping themselves, but with talk of not only a huge light show with more colourful illuminated animal lanterns than ever but plenty of exciting new additions, we think they just might have done it. But the The Botanist, which has a branch in Newcastle city centre, isn't giving the card away to just anyone - you’ll have to prove your love for its signature dish. Upon arrival the buffet started to be laid out and it was very well presented (e.g. mini cakes on small picnic tables), the gluten free was plated already which was very good as when there have been gluten free options elsewhere you find that people without the disease will eat from that selection. The buffet was very generous and everyone was complimentary of the quality, I particularly loved the pastel de nata and couldn't get enough of these (standard buffet).

The hanging kebabs are a popular choice, I usually have the halloumi kebab but I'm naughty and change the cous cous to chips. Perhaps wish dogs could go inside. (Only allowed... outside) Understand not all dogs are as well behaved as ours though! The calamari was good not at all rubbery and the dipping sause was nicely balanced. To follow I had the steak, I asked for rare but it came more medium to cooked. Lucy the server was lovely

The Botanist has launched limited-edition versions of the dish previously, but until now these have beenone-offs on key dates – most recently, the hanging pancake kebab, released specially for Shrove Tuesday. I can’t thankyou enough for the superb evening we all had! The service from all the team was 5 stars hands down. The food was absolutely delicious (as always!) Every member of our table said it was one of the best evenings we have ever... had. The little touches weren’t missed, candle on the table, balloons, strawberries on the birthday cake, cream & ice cream to go with it. You all made my daughter’s 21st birthday so special and I can’t thank you enough. I was drawn to come here by an online image of a star Botanist dessert, a chocolate mousse topped with a chocolate crumb. That crumb could, if you squinted at it, be mistaken for soil. Which presumably was why it was served in a garden trowel. I looked up the Botanist. There are two dozen of them across the country, with more to come. For years I’ve ranted about food being served on things that aren’t plates. I’ve banged on about steaks on scratchy slates, whined about bread in flat caps, full English breakfasts in dog bowls, and mini chip pan fryers. My rants have been received with rapturous applause both virtual and actual; enough to make me assume I am on the side of the angels. And yet here’s the Botanist, doing a roaring trade in hanging kebabs and desserts served on trowels.

This is Spinningfields, they do kebabs differently here. Namely, hanging upside down off a massive skewer so it occasionally slaps you in the face like a meaty in-car air freshener. People in general seem to think they're really good though.
