Fireman Sam first appeared on S4C on 1 November 1987, [4] and a few weeks later on BBC1 on 17 November. Ellie Phillips is the new female firefighter introduced in the latest feature-length special "Heroes of the Storm". She attended the Newtown Fire Academy and was one of the best in the batch. It first appeared in Series 5 along with Tom and his Mountain Rescue 4x4. It was used for patrolling the Pontypandy mountain range and used in a variety of rescues if Tom was required. Pontypandy Veterinary Clinic was introduced in the Series 10 episode, Runaway Horse. Tom has needed to be rescued several times throughout the program for example in Series 8's episode King of the Mountain he got tangled in some ropes in a tree branch that was about to snap, in Series 11's episode The Prince In Pontypandy he had injured his shoulder, in Series 10's episode Float Your Boat he fell asleep on a dingy and drifted out to sea and in Heroes of the Storm for multiple reasons. Tom tumbled of a cliff and needed rescuing in the Series 14 episode, Snap and Spot.

The original idea came about from two ex-firemen from London, England – Dave Gingell and David Jones after purchasing a stop motion animation book by artist Anthony Miller. They approached Mike Young, creator of SuperTed, in Barry, Wales, and asked him to further develop their concept. The idea was then brought to S4C's Director of Animation, Chris Grace, who had previously commissioned SuperTed, saw potential in the idea and commissioned the series. Pontypandy Train Line is a train line that runs up to Pontypadny Mountain where the Mountain Activity Center is and the Old Mines where Penny took the kids in Heroes of the Storm. Wallaby 2 is based on a Westland WS-61 Sea King, a British licence-built version of the American Sikorsky S-61 helicopter of the same name, built by Westland Helicopters. The yellow livery points it as an RAF Search and Rescue Force helicopter.Café was the Italian café ran by Bella Lasagne. Bella's café was based on the real-life 'Bracchis' run by Welsh Italians. It is still seen in the CGI series but as a coffee shop. Cloud Scraper is a hot air balloon created by Joe Sparkes, it appeared in the Series 9 episode "Up, Up and Away". M.O.P. Jones is a robotic bin when to have Sam's plan he was to do to stop people to vehicles in the episode 'The Great Inventor'. Charlie Jones is a fisherman, Bronwyn's husband, Fireman Sam's brother and father of Sarah and James. He is running his fishing boat.
