About this deal

This new episode of "Dog Man" put a big smile on my face and the "Friendly Friends" club song in my head (to the tune of "Jingle Bells"). Now you have those two words in a loop in your head, right? You're welcome. Dav Pilkey is so smart. His plots and humor work on two levels seamlessly. There are bits of human nature throughout that we can relate to at any age. It includes themes relating to personal rehabilitation, fake news, persistence, and a chapter entitled "Cat Cell Culture." And I'm just scratching the surface. The flying submarine has a pie-making machine in the kitchen and a Size-O-Tron with nine settings from "Okay, now you're just being silly" to "Supa Doopa Big. Silly and smart! As if the prospect of a new Dog Man graphic novel isn’t enough, Dav Pilkey has a special surprise lined up for fans in the U.K., U.S., and Canada: a brand-new, original comic book available for free. In the second grade, Dav's teacher ripped up his comics and told him he couldn't spend the rest of his life making silly books. For the second week in a row, Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea: A Graphic Novel (Dog Man #11): From the Creator of Captain Underpants, was the best selling book in the US, according to numbers posted by Publishers Weekly provided by Circana Bookscan. The book sold 152,650 copies. Piggy has returned, and his newest plot is his most diabolical yet. WHAT other new villains are on the horizon? WHERE are they all coming from? And WHO will step forward to save the city when scoundrels sabotage our Supa Buddies?

As if all of that isn’t enough, Scholastic Book Fairs and the Scripps Howard Fund have partnered to distribute free copies of Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under The Sea to 25,000 students and teachers in Title 1 schools, as part of the Fund’s “If You Give A Child A Book…” literacy campaign, aimed at supporting childhood literacy and education in low-income areas. I feel like while we absolutely love Captain Underpants in my family, that Dog Man is just better. Captain Underpants got confusing and less funny, but Dog Man continues to get funnier with each book while also being completely wholesome and incorporating some hilarious inside jokes for the parents. Dav pilkey fun I expected. I love piggy as a villian, he fills the role as the static, unchangeable villian.

When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day. I’ve noticed this in previous books, but Piggy reminds me a lot of Chief Goppernopper and his two goons.
