About this deal

The 5000 odd real dinosaur footprints are made up of around 15 different species. With some of these Bolivia dinosaur footprints measuring up to an astonishing 80cm in length. More than 11,000 footprints have been found from at least ten types of dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous period in an exposed area of over 5,000 square metres. The area is known as the “dinosaur dance world.” A park winds its way from the down the coast museum to the footprints. Life-sized dinosaur statues, playgrounds, picnic areas and a maze can be found along the route and the scenery is supposedly stunning.

Sucre is one of the most popular places to visit in Bolivia, so there are plenty of great places to stay. The park boasts the longest trail of dinosaur footprints in the world, only narrowly eclipsing the Portuguese find. The trail was made by a sauropod that was at least 35 metres long and weighed at least 35 tonnes and lived 145 MYA. The 155 footprints cover a distance of 155 metres and have a length of up to three meters (including the muddy ring that was displaced by his giant foot). The dinosaur has since been identified as Brontopodus plagenensis, which translates as Thunderfoot from Plagne. This popular place to stay in Sucre is a rare find. Why? Because along with it’s beautiful patio, it also has a swimming pool. All rooms have private bathrooms and hot showers. Believed to have been formed an unfathomable 65-68 million years ago during the Mesozoic Era, this area of Bolivia has got history and then some. It’s seriously impressive. In prints produced in perfect conditions, scientists may be able to spot skin impressions or other evidence of the animals' soft anatomy, as well as claw marks and indications of how flexible the digits were. It will feel like you’ve got off in the wrong place though because you’ll be dropped outside the cement factory. There seems to be some conflict in that the land is owned by the cement company, Fancesa, which is still a fully operational factory and quarry. In this guide to Parque Cretacico Bolivia you’re going to get the run down on all you need to know about taking a trip to Sucre Dinosaur Park. Including a little bit about the history, how to get there, the best time to visit and entrance fees.

You’ll learn about the different species of dinosaurs that have been found here in Bolivia and in Argentina too.But how are the dinosaur footprints on a vertical wall? Well shifting tectonic plates are the answer.

Preserved footprints, also known as ichnites, are a type of trace fossil and a window into the lives of dinosaurs. Both the human footprint and the dinosaur print occurred in a relatively short time, possibly within hours of one another, because the ground was still soft enough to produce these prints. If it were millions of year between the two, the human foot print would not have been affected when the dinosaur stepped on top of it. Millions of years would cause massive erosion. but because they were covered shortly after being imprinted, it retained their contours. Perhaps the most impressive dinosaur trails in Europe were found in 2009 in Plagne, France, between Lyon and Geneva (CH). It’s a shame because the designation would bring a welcome cash injection for the preservation of the Sucre dinosaur footprints. So do be mindful that this tour only runs twice a day at 12pm and 1pm. And that you have to go down with a tour guide, it’s not possible to go on your own. Take the two-mile-long Dinosaur Ridge Trail, which has around 250 ‘innie’ fossilised dinosaur footprints from three different types of dinosaur and a crocodilian. Stop off to see the bone bed with its rust-coloured bone shapes in the sandstone – this is where the very first Stegosaurus fossils were found. But Massachusetts isn’t the only place to visit—and even walk in—the footsteps of giants. Here are other dinosaur highways to visit: Parque Cretacico Sucre is home to one of the world’s largest collections of fossilised dinosaur footprints, over 5000 to be exact. Meaning ‘Lime Hill’ in the local Quechua language, the dinosaur footprints literally run up and down a near vertical limestone wall.
