About this deal

Beauty, the heroine of this modern fairy tale, is virtually friendless and re-christened 'Ugly' by her school tormentors. She's also contending with an explosively angry father who delights in belittling her and her mother. This is the third Jacqueline Wilson book I’ve read aloud to my daughter. Though I enjoyed the other two more ( The Butterfly Club and Little Stars), this one had the same superb writing. Something about Wilson’s style makes reading aloud her prose very easy. I guess it’s voice. Her smooth sentences create clear images that convey simply her characters’ view. Those views are often poignant and fun. Mike: A kind painter who owns a B&B House on Rabbit Cove and takes Beauty and Dilly under his wing. I am glad that the ending was more satisfying this time, though it was still open-ended (in a good way).

Cookie (novel) - Wikipedia

When Dilly and Beauty learn that Birthday has been killed by a fox after her father let him out of his cage, Dilly decides she has had enough of her husband, tells him she is separating from him and goes away in her car and takes Beauty with her. First of all, they go to the first Mrs. Cookson ( Avril) who is ver nice. She lets them stay for the night until they decide to go on holiday. The holiday resort they choose Rabbit Cove, Beauty chooses it due to her craze over rabbits. They fin themselves in an idyllic seaside resort run by a man named Mike, who takes Dilly on as a breakfast chef in his B and B.The book was age-banded (as "9+") by the publisher, despite Wilson's opposition to the practice. Beauty Cookson is no beauty. She's a plain, timid girl who constantly feels inferior to the super-confident, snooty girls at school. Worse than the teasing in the playground, though, is the unpredictable, hurtful criticism from her father. Beauty and her meek, sweet mother live in uneasy fear of his fierce rages, sparked whenever they break one of his fussy house rules. Jacqueline Wilson wrote her first novel when she was nine years old, and she has been writing ever since. She is now one of Britain's bestselling and most beloved children's authors. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. More than forty million copies of her books have been sold. Anyway. I couldn't put it down! I read as I was cooking, and my daughter ended up going to bed an hour late because I just had to finish the book! What a great story - I mean, I knew it all already - the horrible bullying schoolmates, not a happy home, but then escape and new friends and everything ends well. And yet... and yet... it's the characters that make the story, isn't it? Beauty with her gentle nature, and her mother - essentially that stupid "babe" that people laugh at usually - but a wonderful warm mother, her father, another deliciously evil villain character complicated by the fact that he is her father, and he does love her, albeit in his twisted way. And the others - snotty rich kids, Mike the painter and the kids in the new school. And Sam and Lily.Skye Wortley: A rude girl in Beauty's class who takes pleasure in bullying Beauty and calling her nasty names like "Ugly". Age banding has been included on Jacqueline Wilson's new book Cookie despite the former children's laureate having signed up to an online campaign against the controversial practice. Jacqueline is also a great reader, and has amassed over 20,000 books, along with her famous collection of silver rings. Gerry Cookson: Beauty's completely evil, vile, abusive and controlling father who has no good in him and emotionally abuses his wife and daughter. Wilson's next book, My Secret Diary, is about her own life as a teenager and is out next March. It will not be age-banded, Wilson said.
