Whenever the casks for the Chivas Regal Extra 13 Tequila Cask would arrive from Mexico, Hyslop and a member of his team went out and nose all the individual casks to make sure they were of a required standard. “There’s nothing worse than maturing whisky for many years and then putting it into casks that do something despicable to the whisky. We’re making sure they haven’t gone sour, or if there are any sulphury notes or strange creamy off-notes. But we were pleased with what we found. They were freshly emptied and were able to get some sweet tropical notes of them, which was just perfect.” Nose: Creamy with plenty of vanilla custard, honey and a tinge of Digestive biscuits, followed by an undeniable herbal edge, pineapple and damp oak.

The current trend for ‘single-malt Scotch Whisky’ has filled up our supermarkets with countless unpronounceable names from obscure distillers. There are dozens to choose from. Much of is is, quite frankly, badly in need of something to be blended with! Chivas is undoubtedly one of the pre-eminent Scotch blended whiskies, even after the disastrous year they had in 2020. They launched the first luxury blended whisky in 1909 (!) and their current Chivas Regal 12 Years is a staple. They also have a more experimental range, called Chivas Extra 13. They’re all aged to 13 years and selectively finished (more on that later) in different ways; Rum, American Rye, Oloroso Sherry and Tequila. The nose starts off pretty thin, yet complex. Rich notes of orange rind, Spring honey, and rye spice make themselves known. Also present are notes that remind me a little of ivory soap, and then spice cake.
