Before reviewing one of the most impressive baking steels for bread, I want to first recommend something a bit more affordable. Like maybe in the same price range as the above best baking stones for bread. Steel radiate heat less evenly than ceramic or cordierite stone, but it can achieve higher temperatures. Steel is virtually unbreakable, but it will need to be seasoned every so often to prevent rusting. Getting a cast iron baking pan is a great choice for your home-cooked pizza as it gives you a lot of space to make big-sized pizza with many toppings. Also, it offers a lot of ease when cleaning and cooking. In contrast, a pizza stone makes cooking and managing pizza a bit of a challenge.

Here's a pic of the first batch of bread I've made on cast iron. Bottom left was done in my dutch oven. The others were made on the griddle. The bread recipe used is the Buttermilk and Honey Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread recipe out of TFL Handbook. I used a egg yolk wash which probably could have been applied better on the sides but looks good otherwise. For steam, well it was near dinner time and I only have one oven, I used a Venison Daube. As for shaping, this was my first time outside of a loaf pan. I tried for a dutch oven cluster (its not all there, over dinner the family had to mop up some gravy from the daube), a round, an oval and two hoagie rolls. I played around with slicing them but I need a razor blade, steak knives are too dull. The odd twist in the upper left is the remains of two baguettes I couldn't get to work. So, I braided them and then forget them in the oven. Must-Read: Steel vs Baking Stone: Which is the Best for Perfectly Crispy Baked Goods? Baking Stone Vs. Cast Iron: The Use Cases Both baking stones and cast iron skillets can be great for baking, but it’s important to consider the pros and cons of each before making a decision. If you’re tired of waiting for the pizza delivery person to show up, or you just like the taste of homemade pizza, a baking stone can take your creations to the next level. A pizza stone gives your crust that crunchiness you love while still keeping your toppings juicy and flavorful.

However, it does not mean that you cannot enjoy crispy pizza from a cast iron baking pan. Cast iron pizza is also crispy but not as much as from a pizza stone. We recommend you choose a cast iron pizza pan to have high quality and tasty pies. Before using them, just wash the dust off – don’t seal them or season them with anything and you’re good to go. You can do this by using an old towel to rub the oil into the pan. Most people agree that towels will snag less on a new stone than paper does. However, they can be more difficult to clean and maintain than baking stones, and they may not be suitable for all types of baked goods. From our perspective, a cast iron baking pan is a much better option than a pizza stone. There are a lot of factors that make it a better choice. The only better advantage of a pizza stone is that it absorbs all the moisture and enables you to have super crispy pizza that is undoubtedly a great treat.
