About this deal

Unfortunately, this book just didn't work. Plot elements strained credulity -- and, yes, I understand that the book was written for a younger audience. (Oh! And the audio was just dreadful. The main character was raised in France with a British father and a French mother, and three other main characters were German. So why did the reader (who had an American English accent) give some of the characters ( really bad) accents, but others had no accents?) First we had Teddy, who's story went from so happy to sad, to happy again. I think had Joe been allowed to stay with Teddy things would have been so great for them both. Then there was Aaron, who seemed like a POS, so glad Joe didn't have to stay there long. Next was Dan, where things were iffy. Dan and Joe were happy together, but the work that Dan was doing wasn't good and Joe ended up hurt. Finally there was Bettina, who was the real looser in all of this. Her initial story about the dogs in general and Felix in particular was great! It's just that Felix had a past that put him in the path of some not good people, which then followed him as he was so valuable for them. In the meantime Bettina Blazak a young reporter for the local Laguna Beach paper ”The Coastal Eddy” is doing research about Street Dogs –they are dogs that don’t have an owner and are dirty, and might be injured. When captured they are treated and placed in a shelter for adoption.

If you enjoyed any of Nielsen's other historical fiction books, you'll see lots of running threads in this one. A young female protagonist, usually set in World War II, with lots of action and gripping moments. Meg Kenyon may be young, but she is already doing what she can to help the Resistance fighters hiding near her grandmere's farm. When her mother gets hurt and an injured British spy takes refuge in their barn on the same night, Meg is recruited for a dangerous mission. She will lead a family of three out of France to safety and gain her father's release from a prison camp in Germany. This book is nonstop action and filled with difficult decisions. As Nielsen points out in her Author's Notes, the fascination with WW II history is in part due to our wonderings about what we would have done had we been in their shoes. Would we have been able to glean clues from this note that Meg received from her father? It's February 1942 and Meg Kenyon, 12, is living on her Grandmère's farm with her French mother in Nazi occupied France. She hasn't seen her English-born dad since he left in May 1940 after receiving a telegram from London and Meg believes he has been imprisoned by the Nazis, if he is even still alive. Before he left, he created a jar full of coded messages for her to solve - deciphering each other's coded messages was something they both enjoyed doing. Now, however, there was only one message left and Meg has been putting off solving it. Joe was recovering from a bullet wound, and Bettina learned that, 35 days ago, a boy found the injured dog on a Tijuana street and carried him to the clinic. There Joe was saved by an emergency operation. Flying Fergus 6: The Cycle Search and Rescue: by Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy, written with award-winning author Joanna NadinIt was strange and awkward and not at all what I had expected. But in a strange and awkward way, I really didn’t mind” (274).

I received a free copy of this audiobook from MacMillan Audio via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own. Also in 1920, The New York Times published an article on The Rescue, in which the 20-year delay from beginning to end of the novel is discussed. [2] Louise Maunsell Field writes that there is a noticeable change in writing style, but it comes at a point where the narrative demands expediency. There is "an increased depth of understanding, an increased subtlety of characterization, of thought, of style". Field also says, "the book is absorbingly interesting: dramatic, subtle, fascinating with allurement". Years ago, when he was five and a half, my oldest son Miles had to have his tonsils taken out, so we brought him to the doctor the day before surgery, so the doctor could tell him what was going to happen. He didn’t want my son to be frightened by the doctor’s mask or what was going to happen. Toward the end of the talk, the doctor bent over and said to my younger son, “Hey Ryan, how are you?”

Rescue by Jennifer A. Nielsen, New York Times bestselling author thrilling World War II story of espionage and intrigue, as one girl races to save her father and aid the French resistance. I'm adding this title to my books I've read by this author. I like her writing style and character development and have come to expect a quality story of historical fiction especially about World War II. My wife and I left the office in a daze and spent the next few days trying to come to grips with what we’d been told. Before we’d left the office, the doctor told us to have our son evaluated and we made the appropriate calls. A lot can happen in a dog's life but a lot can be said for their years. If anything, it's that life is meant to be lived one moment at a time. Simply put—this was a fun read! The twists were twisty, and I especially didn't see the whole thing with the code and the real traitor/villain in their midst coming. I admired the main character and her perseverance and maturity, despite her young age.

They take him to a training facility where they are impressed and state they want to train Joe to be a DEA drug-sniffer.

The other characters? Less interesting. They're written well and they're not unlikable.. they just seemed contradictory and I feel like that prevented me from really connecting with any of them. The movie with Dustin Hoffman, where he plays an autistic character. The one where he lives in an institution. The thrilling retelling of a real-life hostage rescue mission, by SAS hero and million-selling author, Andy McNab. This is a unique mystery/moderate thriller/crime novel because it happens from the perspective of both humans and a very cool dog. It's important to know that a significant chunk happens from the dog's perspective. If this sounds a little too out there for you, this might not be the best option. But, if you are an animal lover and are curious to know how this goes, I recommend queuing this one. I was skeptical but ended up enjoying this very much. Another fabulous piece of historical fiction by Jennifer Nielson! This one is the story of 12-year-old Meg, who has been working for the Resistance in her small village in occupied France. After discovering an injured British spy, she sets off across France and through the French Alps to help smuggle three Germans to safety. She relies on the code games she had played with her father before he went undercover as well. An exciting adventure full of twists and turns. Who can Meg really trust on this perilous journey? Her father's fate lies in her hands. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.

As Dr. Felix Rodriguez shows Bettina around the clinic, they come to a dog she wants to hear more about (named “shot dog” by the vet). He says that a young boy brought him in, bleeding and suffering from grave injuries. He labored to save the animal, giving him a second chance. Almost without thinking, Bettina adopts the dog. Of course, she knows nothing about him or how he got hurt; she just can’t let him die after all that she has heard. The dog’s 30-day adoption period expires that very day. He can no longer be kept at the clinic, and he can't be released onto the streets. That leaves just one option.

An American reporter rescues a Mexican street dog that was wounded in a gunfight and when the drug dealers, DEA, and various past owners find out from her stories that the dog is alive, they all come after her and the dog.
