In total, it’s been about two years! The highlight of the process really was receiving the advance copies of my book, holding it in my hands and thinking about how far it’s come!

Unlike the traditional tale where the girl was saved by a woodcutter, here the little girl thinks no wolf should harm any kid. This is a very thoughtful and insightful story and I liked this ending better than the traditional tale. This type of tale will empower any gender and any child can think they can be brave and can stand for themselves.Little Red is on his way to visit his grandmother on the other side of the wood. Ignoring all warnings of wolves in the wood, he removes his coat and strays from the path. That s when the greedy wolf, lurking in the wood, hatches an evil plan. He steals the little boy's red coat and hurries to the cottage to gobble up Little Red s shortsighted grandmother. And Little Red is next on the menu! But can a keg of delicious sparkling ginger beer save him from a gruesome end? With settings from the fabulously quirky 'Ye Olde Belch' Inn to grandmother's eerie old cottage, this witty reworking of the classic tale is perfectly adapted to 18th-century England and is bursting with period detail. Other titles in the series: Cinderella and Rapunzel. Text Rationale: A perfectly charming retelling of the classic tale, with plenty of side-eye. This version dispenses with all the details, none of that nonsense about not being able to leave the path, and there's no suspense when she meets the wolf in granny's clothing. Red cuts straight to the chase. She's got a plan. On the way to visit her grandmother, Little Red Riding Hood meets a big bad wolf in the forest. Although some children may find this encounter frightening, Little Red is a feisty young girl and is not at all intimidated, so continues on her way. I was at university whilst I was working on Little Red, so I guess going to lectures and seminars were a bit of a distraction – but in a good way!
Also group critiques were a large part of my studio time at university but they were also helpful in refining my story. A witty twist on a favourite fairy tale, Little Red was a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book . The perfect gift for fairy tale fans of all ages , complete with tree-shaped cover flaps, and bright, bold colours that make this a sumptuous sight to behold.

Little Red is an important retelling of the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood, encouraging children to find joy in how the same classic story can be told in different, innovative ways. Lynn Roberts-Maloney has retold many traditional tales in novel ways, including Cinderella, an Art Deco Fairy Tale and Rapunzel, a Groovy 1970s Fairy Tale. David Roberts – her brother – has illustrated many of her texts and is a significant, award-winning illustrator also known for illustrating the Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty. Little Red is bursting with historical 18th-Century English detail and has a strong female protagonist. The action takes place off-screen, but you see Red holding an axe, and then you see Red wearing the wolf's skin, and granny waving good-bye from her front door, so it's pretty clear that Red killed the wolf with an axe and released her grandmother from the wolf's stomach. Some kids will LOVE that twist. I was first introduced to this book a couple months ago, in my picturebook class. We looked at the shapes, the colors, how we moved from verso to recto along with the book. For those picturebook nerds like me, this is a great example of Molly Bang's ten rules and why they work. Growing up, we all loved fairy tales. Often the story was scary, or the woman needed some help to make things work for her. Betha Woollvin wrote these two books with a twist and there was no scary part or the characters can save themselves. I also spent a while researching fairy tales and their structure, before I decided upon Little Red Riding Hood. There was no commission as such, the book began life as a project in the second year of my illustration degree. A very broad brief was handed to us, simply to make a book of any kind. I decided to use this opportunity to experiment with illustrating for children, and with narrative illustration.I started Little Red whilst I was at university in my second year of my BA in illustration. The class were given a project to create a book in six weeks – that was it, a very open brief. Quite a few people in our class decided to give our brief a bit more structure by taking the opportunity to base it around a live brief or a competition. This is when I heard about the Macmillan prize for illustration. Daily Mail This is my book of the year so far . . . Woollvin is a striking new talent with strong retro style illustrations and a simple, witty text. Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations. The text and illustrations in this Little Red Riding Hood retelling are stripped down to their bare minimum, and thus words and pictures collaborate in telling the story instead of repeating each other -- very well done!
