At last, the definitive book about perhaps the best cabin crew dramedy ever filmed: View From the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Ford, Rebecca (20 May 2017). "Cannes: Robert Pattinson to Star in Two-Part Film 'The Souvenir' ". The Hollywood Reporter . Retrieved 7 March 2018. Unlike The Wiggles’ ear worm (sorry Jeff), it’s an oddly affective vision. Each time Gwenyth in Paris appears, I think of myself bored, pre-menstrual, naively drifting through a world of VCDs. Each time Gwenyth in Paris appears, I know I am further from that girl.

When my parents weren’t watching the news, they were either waiting to watch the news or recovering from watching the news. He studied Law at Cambridge University, where he became president of the famous Footlights theatrical club. I’m not saying we don’t need lawyers. But that’s only because I’ve been legally advised not to make that statement.”Phillips, Michael (26 July 2012). " 'The Watch': These guardians out of time, tune". Chicago Tribune . Retrieved 6 March 2018. In episode six of season one, Ayoade provides the voice of droid pilot Q9-0... as you can hear in the clip below. Ayoade on Ayoade' is, in parts, laugh out loud funny however it is also quite disjointed, especially the book's lengthy appendices which, whilst still good, got a bit boring and repetitive. This is not a biography. Or an autobiography, though there are some elements of such here. It's more of an assault of autobiographies and interviews and cinema as a whole, and so many other things.

In February 2006, Ayoade began playing technically brilliant, but socially awkward, IT technician Maurice Moss in the sitcom The IT Crowd on Channel 4, appearing with Chris O'Dowd, Katherine Parkinson, Chris Morris, and later on, Matt Berry. The series' creator Graham Linehan wrote the part specifically for Ayoade. [29] In 2008, Ayoade won the award for an outstanding actor in a television comedy series at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival for his performance. [30] In 2009, Ayoade co-starred with Joel McHale in the pilot for an American version of The IT Crowd, reprising his role with the same appearance and personality; however, no series was commissioned, and the pilot never aired. [31] The original The IT Crowd ran for four seasons until 2010, with a special airing in 2013, for which Ayoade won a BAFTA for Best Male Comedy Performance. [32] [33] For those who, like me, wondered if this was coming a little too early in the career of Richard Ayoade, rest assured – this is a spoof of those grandiloquent career-spanning interview books. It's a very competent spoof, too – one showing that he can put pen to paper and come up with something clever enough, enjoyable and witty and at times sprightly, and very well sustained. Unfortunate, then, that he has sustained mediocrity too far. Rachel Smalter Hall (5 September 2013). "Listen to Kate Winslet, Richard Ayoade and Other Famous People Read Roald Dahl". bookriot.com . Retrieved 1 January 2015. I hope the idea of seeing me in the street is as boring to everyone else as it would be for me," he told The Independent in 2014. Jenkins, Tom (31 March 2014). Harrison, Andrew (10 February 2015). "Totally Mexico! How the Nathan Barley nightmare came true". The Guardian . Retrieved 16 June 2016. I would definitely recommend this to those who like in-depth takedowns of bad movies. Adroit, satirical, and whimsical, Ayoade on Top is a really entertaining read. Keough, Peter (17 June 2011). "Interview with Richard Ayoade, director of Submarine". The Phoenix . Retrieved 4 January 2015. Much as you may love Richard, don't fall into the trap that he can be as interesting in printed form.

Chang, Justin (10 September 2013). "Toronto Film Review: 'The Double' ". Variety . Retrieved 6 March 2018.

Ayoade isn't a fan of the documentary, though, telling The Guardian in 2014: “It was literally one of the things that made me not want to do interviews again. You have to imagine: a bunch of 21-year-olds, never-been-out-of-the-house type people. Our tour manager is another 21-year-old saying, ‘This is very important publicity, Anglia television want to do a feature.’ It was awful." I started reading this book around 10pm one night, thinking to myself I'd just get in 30 mins or so before bed. I stayed up until 6am because I kept laughing so much that I'd flood my body with adrenaline and whatever other feel-good chemicals are released when you laugh. Fact is, a commercial aeroplane is one of the most restrictive enviornments in the world. Want to know the difference between a commercial aeroplane and communist China? You can smoke, guff and make consensual love in communist China without fear of reproach!” Of course his ramblings and in depth analogies of the scenes were what kept the book together, kept it funny and kept me going, although sometimes, being as wordy as it was, it was hard to follow sometimes. I was expecting something more like a memoir but Ayoade really sounds like a high class film reviewer as he discusses certain dialogue or scenes, or at least he would if he wasn't subvertently and completely taking the piss out of it. Growing up in the quiet English town of Ipswich, he became obsessed with J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.
