About this deal

Now most people would simply see their solicitor, make the necessary arrangements and leave it at that; but then, Veronica McCreedy is not most people. A fiction novel (US Title: "How the Penguins Saved Veronica") introduces Veronica McCreedy, a fussy but charming old woman who doesn’t know to whom she's going to leave her considerable wealth after she dies since her estranged grandson is not an option.

Away With the Penguins by Hazel Prior Book review: Away With the Penguins by Hazel Prior

When she watches a television programme about Amelie Penguins, Veronica decides that she must make a journey to Antarctica to see them for herself. It was a short boat ride to Isla Martillo and we were reminded of the rules: don’t get too close to the penguins; don’t feed the penguins; don’t touch the penguins; don’t steal the penguins; don’t take anything from the island. We weren’t permitted to go within three metres of the penguins but, if they came to us, we were to keep whatever distance we could so as not to stress them out. A final quip of “control your emotions” from the boat’s captain was most likely directed at us following our visible joy at seeing a large colony of penguins gathered on the beach as we approached the island. Within minutes, we were standing on the beach with them. This is my second Hazel Prior book and I really enjoy her quirky character driven stories. Veronica is in her seventies, living on her own, and has lived a life marked by stark loneliness and tragedy. She has no one left. No family. Except… she discovers, she does. A long lost grandson she never knew about is discovered, and the book delves into his life, into her past coming of age during WW2, and a mission to Antarctica to be with the penguins (which was my favorite part of the book—penguins, so adorable.) This is a difficult time for would-be Antarctic adventurers, with expeditions to the continent in the south being cancelled on a regular basis due to Covid-19 and the government’s regulations for ships that have an outbreak. Our trip was cancelled just two days before we were due to embark – read more on that here– but we made the decision to travel to Ushuaia regardless and we didn’t regret it. There are three types of people in this world, Very. There are those who make the world worse, those who make no difference, and those who make the world better. Be one who makes the world better, Very, if you can." A note for animal lovers: There is one brief scene of bird-on-penguin violence that may be disturbing.

She can be found either collecting litter from the beach (‘people who litter the countryside should be shot’), trying to locate her glasses (‘someone must have moved them’) or shouting instructions to her assistant, Eileen (‘Eileen, door!’). Away With The Penguins is a story about two brave penguins, Pip and Pop, who go on an exciting adventure. After being separated from the rest of their colony, they make their way across the Antarctic landscape, encountering all kinds of wildlife along the way. They must also find food and shelter as they travel, and eventually make it to the South Pole where they are reunited with the rest of their family. Along the way, they learn valuable lessons about friendship, loyalty, and courage. A warm and witty journey of self-discovery. Prior proves that it’s never too late to become the person you were meant to be. Wendy Wax, bestselling author of MY EX-BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING At the start of the story, Veronica imparts her father’s wisdom. What one piece of advice would you impart?Elderly Veronica McCreedy is such a grumpy but charming 85 year old lady who soon becomes enthused into visiting a scientific study of penguins in Antarctic having watched a documentary about them on TV. The book starts by introducing the main character Veronica McCreedy, 86 y.o who lives in a mansion by the sea in Aryshire, Scotland.

Veronica McCreedy, a resident of Scotland, ends up in Antarctica against the advice of scientists who warned her against it. She is well aware of her financial status and wields it to exert control over everyone around her, including, in some way, her pet penguin. courtesy IMP Awards) Creative inspiration can come from all kinds of strange, beautiful and unexpected places – a waterfall at sunset, a colourfully-dressed woman on a train at peak hour or a snippet of history, long forgotten but dredged up to fill a social media post with a fascinating factoid. Continue Reading Before departing for the island, we stopped at a small museum, Museo Acatushún, on the Harberton Ranch where student volunteers talked us through the impressive skeleton collection on display. You can read more on that here. Veronica McCreedy is a fussy, unfriendly, skeptical 85-year-old woman, living in her huge house in Scotland. She likes to be left alone, is sure that her memory is perfect (it’s not), and is, in general, fed up with the world, her housekeeper Eileen, and the hand life has dealt her. Antarctica was beautifully described and when Veronica was there with the scientist, I could almost feel as if I was there with them too. With Veronica’s arrival, it was interesting to see how the scientists accepted her arrival and got used to her as time went on, but weren’t too keen at first. Their dynamic changed and Hazel wrote this amazingly. Away With The Penguins took me on such a journey, a winter adventure that I never knew I needed! There was a lot of raw emotion, the guilt of time lost, of the things that never happened, of the life that just keeps on going and the years pass on by.

I never knew what the characters were going to do next and it really enhanced the book for me.

And the writing, itself, is to die for. The novel is elegantly written; Prior’s prose is gorgeous. Every word is a joy to read.

Two days later I am still sitting here. We haven’t been able to venture outside at all. It is mind-numbingly tedious and suffocatingly claustrophobic. I miss the earth, the air, the sky. I miss the penguins. I can’t stand Mike any more, can’t stand Dietrich and at times I even can’t stand Terry. I just can’t get over all the penguin cuteness in Hazel Prior’s new novel, How the Penguins Saved Veronica. OMG. At first glance, this is not the type of book I usually read but I love penguins so took a chance and I'm so glad I did. The main character is just wonderful and the plot a delightful surprise. So, now's the time to get a lot of those end-of-life things out of the way. Like where her vast fortune would go. As I neared the top of the stairs, I realised there were Magellanic nests everywhere. We had to watch our step as the nests were directly beside the walkway, or under it. One nest was on the walkway and I had to turn to the girl behind me – who was understandably distracted by other penguins – to warn her to be careful. She would have stepped right into a nest of two babies and a parent otherwise.
