FDA is alerting consumers of a voluntary recall of Bayer’s Alka-Seltzer Plus products due to labeling errors. Forced diuresis should not be used since it does not enhance salicylate excretion and may cause pulmonary oedema. Aspirin and paracetamol are both used for the treatment of pain and reduction of fever. Aspirin also has anti-inflammatory properties, whilst caffeine acts as mild stimulant.

Following a review of the special container status of certain products, the Department of Health of Social Care (DHSC) has re-determined the following products now meet the special container criteria as set out in the Drug Tariff. whose renal or hepatic function is impaired. The hazards of overdose are greater in those with non-cirrhotic alcoholic liver disease. The active substances are aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) (267mg per tablet), paracetamol (133mg per tablet) and caffeine (40mg per tablet).Administration of aspirin at doses greater than 300mg/day, shortly before birth can lead to intra-cranial haemorrhages, particularly in premature babies. Are allergic to any other pain relieving oranti-inflammatory medicines (eg NSAIDS orsalicylates). For more information see section 4‘Possible Side Effects’. Do not take Alka-Seltzer XS if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying for a baby unless directed byyour doctor. Aspirin can prolong labour and affectblood clotting in the mother or baby. Although clinical and epidemiological evidence suggests the safety of acetylsalicylic acid for use in pregnancy, caution should be exercised when administered to pregnant patients.

You should ask your doctor before taking aspirin if you are taking any other medicines including those for blood clots (thrombosis) such as warfarin or gout such as probenecid. This is because too much paracetamol can cause delayed, serious liver damage. Symptoms of paracetamol overdosage in the first 24 hours are pallor, nausea, vomiting, anorexia and abdominal pain. Liver damage may become apparent 12 to 48 hours after ingestion. Abnormalities of glucose metabolism and metabolic acidosis may occur. In severe poisoning, hepatic failure may progress to encephalopathy, coma and death. Acute renal failure with acute tubular necrosis may develop even in the absence of severe liver damage. Cardiac arrhythmias and pancreatitis have been reported. Each Alka-Seltzer XS tablet contains 472mg of sodium. This should be taken into consideration bypeople on a controlled sodium diet.
