About this deal

Young Ali Cross is a smart, usually responsible, resourceful, and inquisitive cop's kid. The son of renowned police detective and former FBI agent Alex Cross, Ali has the brains and ability to follow in his father's footsteps. In this adventure, Ali and a few of his like-minded buddies, engage in police shadowing with the aid of his friend Gabe's latest invention. Kudos, Mr. Patterson, for another great piece in the Cross series. This one has remained solid and I do wish you would focus on those pieces that are stellar, rather than mass producing every idea brought to your feet, for money and acclaim. With a detective for a dad and knowing other officers, Ali struggles with all of the anger against the police force, but he knows the community is right too, in many situations. I shouldn’t have said that last part about doing good. Dad’s always reminding me, we have freedom of speech here, and freedom of the press, too. Just because a few reporters don’t know how to be professional, it doesn’t mean they’re all bad. They’re mostly good at their jobs. Just like cops. When he finally gets to have his say, he knows this is his chance to try and heal at least a tiny bit of the hurt in his neighbourhood.

During a summer in coastal Maine, the kids of Spruce Point work to break a ghostly curse and save a family inn. There's a substory about Alex being sued by the family of a man he possibly shoved and put in a coma (Alex says he slipped). I have no idea if this is part of a story from the Alex Cross books, but it won't matter to MG readers because it's explained well enough for them without requiring them to have read another book. Ali’s desire to become a much respected detective like his father (Alex Cross) still burns brightly inside him. His friend Gabe has developed an app that feeds into local police radio, sending texts and notifications to Ali at all times, day and night. This allows Ali to follow his passion as he and Gabe observe crimes in progress.

This is a fast paced book that I could not put down. Before I knew it it was 5:00 am. I love how we see this young man grow. He still has the drive and curiosity but he is also a deep thinker.

Ali Cross (Ali Cross, book 1) by James Patterson Ali Cross (Ali Cross, book 1) by James Patterson

Ali's detective work leads to his being held prisoner by a burglar who twists his arm and punches him. Ali's father, a famous detective, is under threat of prison and disgrace, and the whole family's under stress, because he's accused (falsely) of violence against the father of a murder suspect. Meanwhile, the man's in a coma and feelings run high. Ali sometimes loses control of his temper and punches his tormentor, for which he gets consequences (the tormentor, not so much). A kid has a violent father who threatens him, forces him to commit burglary, and assaults women (his wife and a cop) during the story. Guns are stolen in the course of a robbery and then returned. When Ali's best friend Gabe is reported missing, Ali is desperate to find him. At the same time, a string of burglaries targets his neighborhood -- and even his own house. With his father on trial for a crime he didn't commit, it's up to Ali to search for clues and find his friend. But being a kid sleuth isn't easy -- especially when your father warns you not to get involved! -- and Ali soon learns that clues aren't always what they seem. Will his detective work lead to a break in Gabe's case or cause even more trouble for the Cross family?I thought Father Bernadin might cut me off right there, but he didn’t. Everyone just waited, so I kept going. James Patterson delivers an appealing hero, engaging characters, plenty of action, and a raft of book recommendations in this series debut featuring the young son of his noted detective Alex Cross. A master storyteller who's determined to make more kids like reading, he's off to a promising start as middle-schooler Ali Cross matches wits with online gamers and real-life criminals in his quest to find and save his missing friend.

Ali Cross: The Secret Detective - Goodreads Ali Cross: The Secret Detective - Goodreads

Language not really appropriate for children which is pretty funny since he starts out saying his friend and he used another word for “junk” in the beginning and then it just dissolves into the actual bad language and curse words. That was it. Then he’d turned east on E Street and started walking home. I’d turned west and done the same. I didn’t even think about it. Why would I? Who ever thinks, “maybe that’s the last time I’ll ever see my friend”? Hemos leído este libro en el club de lectura middle-grade de la Libroteca #LosCazalibros y la verdad es que nos ha gustado mucho. It had been three days since my friend disappeared and I was starting to think the worst might have happened. Unlike the two previous books in this series, there's no central mystery here. The title refers to Ali sneaking out to various crime scenes. Do you know any kids who are being pressured (or threatened) by family members or others into doing things they know are wrong? Is there anything you can do to help?
