About this deal

K612 PRO headphones are reference open, over-ear phones that deliver natural sound imaging for professional monitoring. The advanced open technology offers comfort for long working sessions and a full, spacious sound. AKG’s patented Varimotion™ diaphragm technology completes the unique sound of the K612 PRO. The K601 sounds nothing like the graph really. I was always suggesting you try them since they're much better for gaming IMO than the K702 but not Q701. I think the upper mids peak is more present on the K601 compared to the Q701. Thanks again for your detailed and insightful inbox reply (I wasn't sure if you were still following this >1.5 yr old thread). So yeah, you’re in the right place for sure. My 1 2 3 is 6XX, Sundara, 702. Sundara could be the solution actually as its treble is more tamed down which ended up being the outlier with regard to the HIFIMAN lineup. I'm using my AKG K612 PRO headphone with my Fiio X3 2nd Gen dedicated DAP. Currently I don't own any headphone amp but planning to buy an A5. I'm gonna update this review when I do. The K612, K712, and K702 represent the most significant discrepancies between the entire line of K600 and 700 headphones. Wow. These cans have absolutely blown me away. The treble has settled down completely and now sits perfectly with the bass and mids. The entire spectrum is wonderfully blended without sounding messy or lost, and the imaging seems to have improved as well; the sense of space is more natural and the separation remains consistent without isolating instruments completely from one another. One can expect the elastic bands for regulating the headband height to loose it’s tension after a few years. Thanks for bearing with me for this longish post. Bottom line – both headphones are very good – and preference will depend on individual tastes. If you like a slightly more expansive stage – with a crisper detail oriented signature – the K702 will be better for you. If you like a more natural overall presentation, with a touch more warmth – then the K612 is really very good. It isn’t a very sensitive headphone so needs a decent amp. Together with some EQ in the lows and an amplifier that can supply enough voltage (it doesn’t require a lot of power) the K612 sounds impressive. The K701’s bass rolls off slightly more than the 702’s, but at the end of the day, all three (701/702/612) are very similar. When one uses a 10 band equalizer and pulls the 1.5kHz slider up or down 2.5dB this is audible. There are small differences between the models but not substantial ones. There’s nothing about the 712 that warrants the price over the 702 – i.e. it doesn’t inherently do anything better.

Let me start by saying that I really like the sound of both. I’ve always been a fan of AKG’s presentation. If I was to sum them up in a short sentence (both headphones) – then it would be: eH250, SRH840, MS1i, AD700, DT880 Pro, SRH940, HD600, HM5, K701, DT880 600 ohm, SR325i (woody) SRH840 (again), Q701, SRH1840, Mad Dogs 3.2, K702, HD600 (again), K612 – and the very soon to arrive RS1. The 702’s 2kHz bump gives it much-needed energy and the treble sounds crisp and fantastic without overdoing it. They differ slightly in the bass mostly and around 1.5kHz. The K612 being a bit more 'linear' sounding. The plot below (right channel only) shows how the sound changes when it is fed from a 0 Ω amplifier and a 120 Ω output R amplifier.Midrange: The midrange on this headphone is what some may consider forward, it's delicate, precise, has good dynamics, and just sounds very natural and organic. It's just beautiful sounding. Some of the ‘harshness’ in the treble is lowered and you don’t get the sense of ‘hyper detail’ any more. It still has retained the original character but the ‘piercing’ is gone. It is slightly more obvious that the treble isn’t really that resolving and smooth though but more pleasant to me than when in original form. I got my K712 mainly because of the looks and because I thought that “bigger number = better”. Do you think it’s worth buying a K702 if i already have a K712? Or should i go with something different, like the 6XX instead? It causes the signature to sound kind of dull in certain instances (like a Sundara) but is still a headphone I’d rather have over the 612.
