About this deal

Perhaps most recognizable from the movie 300 are Queen Gorgo's quotes that appeared in the Greek historian Plutarch's writings: Graphics are amazing, unique and pioneer for their time; too brutal and too tale-like. Lines are as spartan-like as they should be: "το λακωνίζειν εστί φιλοσοφείν" (talk as less as you can to be wise) is the moto of these soldiers that fear nothing, even death himself. "Η ταν ή επί τας" (come carrying this shield or be brought up to it") is the other hesitate-in-front-of-no-enemy moto. Frank Miller`s Sin city & 300 & Spirit – Database articles, images and other files about Frank Miller and his comics. And yet Frank Miller would have us believe they're better than the cultured Athenians (who're habitually described as boy-lovers, in spite of the Spartans being big macho maries themselves), that they can rationally reject their religion (the priests are painted as corrupt) and that what they're fighting for in their battle against the Persians is WESTERN CIVILISATION ITSELF.

Even in the face of sure defeat, brave soldiers stand firm against tyrannous threats to freedom. A corrupt Spartan councilman is exposed as a traitor and brought to justice. But also some stereotyping based on Asian culture, as well as one character's physical disability. Striking when the iron’s hot, Frank Miller follows up 300 20 YEARS after it was first published with Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander - and it really wasn’t worth the wait. It’s such a rubbish sequel. And so confusing! I had no idea what was going on and had to do my own research to understand what Miller should’ve been able to convey if he were still a competent storyteller. This historical epic, set in the world of 300, tells of the upsurge and decline of the Persian King's empire, and the ascent of the Grecian realm through Alexander. The original [music] Score here, composed by Tyler Bates, sounds absolutely larger than life and gets represented all across the board (so-to-speak) in the Atmos mix, with excellent use of the height and rear channels in addition to being heavily driven from the front left & right channels. The sound effects during the battles sound downright extravagant and will leave you cringing at some of the hand-to-hand or rather sword-to-body fighting scenes. The mix is just something that fits this film perfectly, utterly, from the very start of the film when the logo starts to when the end credits roll.

For the record: being a warrior class, the Spartans almost certainly did practice homosexuality. There's also evidence they tended to lie about it. It's not a big leap to postulate that they ridiculed their hedonistic Athenian rivals for something they themselves did. "Hypocrisy" is, after all, a word we got from the Greeks. Christ. This is crazy. Sparta's described as having this nightmarish culture where children are left out to die of exposure, men are ritually abused by each other to demonstrate toughness, the disabled are rejected in spite of their potential skills because they fail to fit into the military system, and international law is null and void (this is madness! No one kills a messenger! This is Sparta!). is about as violent as “Apocalypto” and twice as stupid. Adapted from a graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, it offers up a bombastic spectacle of honor and betrayal, rendered in images that might have been airbrushed onto a customized van sometime in the late 1970s. The basic story is a good deal older. It’s all about the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, which unfolded at a narrow pass on the coast of Greece whose name translates as Hot Gates.I went to Greece and researched the story as much as I could - walked the battlefield and all of that - and just put it all down. It took a lot of distillation of the genuine history and I'm taking an awful lot of liberties with everything, but that's my job. If you want reality, catch a documentary. - Frank Miller, Author of 300 Graphic Novel The story then shifts about a year later and ends as now-Captain Dilios relates the heroic sacrifice of Leonidas and his Spartan comrades to his troops before the historic Battle of Plataea.
