About this deal

The light beam has a central focus, illuminating roads well, and the peripheral illumination helps you see what’s at the edge of your vision. While power feels less than claimed, it’s ample to ride gnarly trails with confidence, although a better beam spread would be helpful in tight turns.

Battery level is indicated by the number of hours remaining, and the light doubles up as a power bank with a USB output – handy for emergency charging of items such as a bike computer or phone. The NiteRider Lumina Dual 1800 front light has great power and beam spread for its price. Georgina Hinton Very easy. About five hours empty to full. Tell us about the controls. Can you operate it with gloves? Are there enough settings? Is there a remote? The Light & Motion Seca Comp 2000 is a great choice for casual night rides. Ian Linton / Immediate MediaDespite the head unit’s diminutive size, the beam’s gentle green hue is well-balanced between spot and flood, giving a long throw down the trail. The brightness of your bike light should be determined by the type of riding that you’ll be doing. Whether you’re riding on trails, road, lighted streets are all factors to weight when selecting a bike light with the necessary brightness for your needs. Only using on the bar – works perfectly. Describe the beam pattern? Centred, wide, narrow, blobby, smooth etc?

Some lights are now also marketed for daytime use, with the appropriate brightness and flash patterns to help keep you seen in bright sunshine and low light.

As a relatively inexpensive high-powered light, the Meteor Storm Pro is best suited to riders not looking to get too rowdy on the trail – we’d say it’s perfect for people who dabble in night riding rather than those looking to go out on regular epics. How we tested

Dynamo-powered lights – which, most commonly, are powered by a generator hub built into a wheel – are a very popular option on touring and town bikes, and with good reason. They offer infinite run time and the optics in the lights are often very high quality. The PR900 front light is the real star of this set, offering a novel, twin-lens design and enough power to make it suitable for riding on unlit roads or even off-road. The power of a bike light is usually expressed in lumens. Lumens are the unit by which the total amount of light emitted from a source is measured. The Topeak Taillux 100 is a bright rear light that has a decent run time. It lasted 2.5 hours in its 100-lumen mode, but our tester eked out 10 hours using the mode that alternates between blinking and constant. The LEDs give a mix of spotlight and wide-angle side illumination that’s good for a wide variety of trails. Using the light isn’t intuitive though and we had to study the manual before we could get riding. The Reflex++ mode senses movement, adjusting power output to the difficulty of the trail. Stop riding, or cruise along a smooth section of trail, and the light dims slowly so your eyes can adjust. In its Overdrive setting, the Macro Drive is a bright beast of a light. Russell Burton / Immediate Media The intermediate settings are well thought-out and, although we’d prefer a slightly smoother transition between these, it is possible to programme the light to suit your needs.
