About this deal

The first step is to decide on the angle of your slope. For most projects, a 45-degree tip will suffice. But if you’re working on something more intricate, you may want to experiment with smaller or larger angles. Any of the Dremel tools that rotate at high speeds will easily be used as a routing or beveled. We recommend using something similar to the Dremel 8100 as it is one of the first in the lineup from Dremel that can easily reach the required speeds of a router.

A bevel cut is an angled cut, but it differs from a miter cut, which is also angled, in that the top of the wood isn’t perpendicular to the edges. If you want to create a decorative edge, you can use a chisel. Beveling wood is an easy way to add interest to any project. It’s a simple technique that anyone can learn with practice. A bevelled edge (UK) or beveled edge (US) is an edge of a structure that is not perpendicular to the faces of the piece. The words bevel and chamfer overlap in usage; in general usage they are often interchanged, while in technical usage they may sometimes be differentiated as shown in the image at right. A bevel is typically used to soften the edge of a piece for the sake of safety, wear resistance, or aesthetics; or to facilitate mating with another piece. The piece you are working on needs to be secured, if that is a work table or the larger piece you are working on. If the part is unable to move, it means you have complete control over the Dremel as you are cutting. This allows you to cut to the exact depth that you need without sudden jerks. Circular saw: A circular saw is a less versatile tool than a miter saw or table saw, but it can still be used to make bevel cuts. It is typically used for making rough cuts, but it can be used to make precise cuts if the blade is guided by a fence.

The most important part is not to rush while beveling but not to move so slowly that the wood starts to be burnt. This is often the thing that most artisans struggle with, with even seasoned artisans regularly leaving burn marks when they are beveling pieces, especially on deeper cuts.G-clamps: When you are routing and beveling any piece of work, you won’t be able to hold onto the piece while you are cutting it. When working with a Dremel, we recommend that you have several on the edges of the piece while you are working, holding it firmly in place. If you have a properly ground gouge to start with, you can usually make templates that will let you reproduce that grind. It will then be easy to reset the jig at any time, so you can either sharpen the original gouge, or duplicate its grind on another one. Sharp tools are critical to good work, as all turners know. If the tool is blunt, the wood rejects the cutting edge. If you force it to cut, it tears the grain. But sharpening bowl gouges and spindle gouges can be a challenge. It’s perfectly possible to sharpen them freehand, with or without the help of a platform set at the correct angle, but this is a skill that takes time to learn. Most people prefer sharpening gouges with a jig. I use a Oneway Varigrind jig, the type to which this article refers.
