About this deal

All three wombat species live in Australia and Tasmania. Their habitats include mountainous regions, forests, and grasslands. 15. Critically endangered

Wombat burrows are continuously being built by their owners into a long, complex network of tunnels and warrens.Like most marsupials, wombats carry their young (often called a joey) in a front pouch. The young climb into the pouch shortly after birth and remain there till they are developed enough to emerge into the world. Bare-nosed Wombat is one of the few marsupials that are active above the snowline in winter, however they appear to be less active than during warmer months. In summer, the animal is mainly nocturnal, emerging from its burrow when the air cools down, to avoid high temperatures. In general, wombats spend most of their lives (about two thirds) in their burrows. Feeding and diet Even though wombats sometimes live together in interconnected burrows, they’re generally shy creatures. Male northern hairy nosed wombats live alone, while females can get along well enough to share an underground home. Often these burrows contain numerous entrances and escape routes. Sometimes these tunnels can extend as long as 650 feet (200 meters) as a combined distance.

Animal collective nouns are always interesting, like a “gaggle of geese”, or our favorite, a “bloom of ladybugs”. There are several subspecies of the common wombat: the Mainland Common Wombat ( Vombatus ursinus hirsutus), Tasmanian wombat ( Vombatus Ursinus Tasmaniensis), and the Flinders Island wombat ( Vombatus ursinus ursinus).

The three species are the Bare-Nosed Wombat (Vombatus Ursinus), the Southern Hairy-nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons), and the Northern Hairy Nosed (Lasiorhinus krefftii). An adult wombat usually grows to about a meter long. A wombat at full pace can hit speeds of 25mph, (or 40kmph) and maintain that speed for around 90 seconds. 9. Wombats work aloneMuch like a rodent’s teeth, a Wombat’s set of teeth never stops growing. This prevents them from grinding down from continuously chewing on grasses, shrubs, roots, and vegetables. The common wombat is widespread, populating Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is found only in Queensland, and the southern hairy-nosed wombat is found in a small region of the southern central coastline of Australia.
