So, all the sprues you’ll find in any of the new Age of Sigmar Starter Sets come from the Dominion box. As anyone who has read our Dominion review will be able to tell, the sprues below are all given a letter value – A through to J. All of the sprues you’ll see below are assigned the same letter value as their Dominion forebears, which is why you may find some gaps in the numbering below. Judicators with Skybolt Bows are a staple of most Stormcast Eternals armies, and this isn’t likely to change in the new edition. Their ability to deal quality damage at range is a great way to soften up your enemy before your slower-moving foot troops finish them off in melee. Knight-Vexillor

Miniatures: 1 Spoilpox Scrivener, 2 Pusgoyle Blightlords/ Lord of Afflictions, 5 Putrid Blightkings, 10 Plaguebearers of Nurgle The Castigators have five models but it’s a three model unit, so you’re one short of having 2 units. Find a spare Castigator somewhere, or just ignore the remaining odd Castigators. Castigators are a value-priced shooting unit, but their most important role is being in a warscroll with the Ordinator and the Ballista. Once again, you will notice some crossover. The five battleplans included in the Warrior, Harbinger and Extremis books are all the same – save that they have been appropriately tweaked to foster in the slight variation in units and terrain that you’d find from set to set. Anyway, beneath the divider resides everything else: the mat, the books, the cards, the bases and the dice. Each of the Cities is tied to a different Mortal Realm, and your army must be from the same Realm as its parent City. The rules for Mortal Realms are covered in General’s Handbook 2020, as are updated points values and so on. Keeping up to date with the General’s Handbook is advised no matter what army you play, but moreso when an army benefits from generic Endless Spells and realm rules as much as Cities of Sigmar do. Starting Your ArmyBoth Chaos Knights and Chaos Warriors are battleline for this army. In conclusion this is a good set, a great replacement of the previous one and an excellent starting point for a Slaves to Darkness army. Even buying the second box would not be a sin.

Strike Chamber – These guys are the first of Sigmar’s legion and as a result are the most flexible of the bunch. Their most common troops are known as the Liberators which are the cheapest troop choice the Stormcasts have. And if you look at almost every single ad GW put out about Age of Sigmar, you would see these are the poster boys. Effective, simple, straightforward, but no real major specialization. If you want to go this route I highly recommend the start collecting box called “ The Thunderstrike Brotherhood” because it comes with everything you need for a great start! 10 liberators, 3 prosecutors which are liberators with wings, a Lord relictor which I will get into later, and then Vandus Hammerhand himself. Vandus is the big grand daddy of the Hammers of Sigmar Stormhost with his awesome mount, abilities, and the biggest freakin’ hammer in the mortal realms. His kit can also be built as a normal lord on the same mount as well. Flexibility. All of your units have higher than average stats and can fill any battle role. There’s a reason Stormcast are jokingly referred to as “Sigmarines.” If you are starting a Khorne mortal army this is a good starting point as there are 3 heroes, 1 elite unit and 2 more battleline units, but remember you will need to integrate with more boxes to obtain the missing options. Scions of the Storm lets you place units in reserve and bring them on to the table at the end of any of your movement phases (so Turn 1). The Pusgoyle set allows to build alternatively a single Lord of Afflictions, since the sprue is for 2 models you would normally be left with a spare Pusgoyle, but since AoS 3.0, there’s now a point cost for single model-units (cannot be reinforced, while the 2 models version could be).

The Primal Kings

With Celestial Blades this increases to 4 wounds plus the mortal wounds. This is equivalent to 2 ardboyz after saves. The Vindictors, with a Bravery stat of 7 (+1 thanks to the Banner Bearer), a roll of 2 remained resolute in spite of their two losses. With all the objectives contested – bar the one the Stormcast Eternals had abandoned – no-one was awarded any points. This one contains a Grey Seer as a leader, 3 Stormfiends that are always useful in a Skaven army, 20 Clanrats that represent the main battleline and an artillery piece. It’s interesting that the setup for this Battleplan don’t utilise the Hobgrots, who actually have a ranged weapon on their warscroll. Either the Hobgrots’ shrapnel grenades would totally unbalance the Battleplan, or Gee-Dubyah got a little happy with the copy-pasting (something I can understand having had to review three of these boxes!). The Praetors are a great inclusion for any Starter Set as they are really simple to build, but look awesome when completed.

Miniatures: 1 Chaos Lord, 1 Chaos Chariot or Gorebeast Chariot, 5 Chaos Knights, 10 Chaos Warriors. These sprues are separated from your paper goods below by a divider. Once side is printed with the Age of Sigmar logo, the other with the iconic Vindictor-Prime versus Killaboss artwork. The obvious starting point, this has everything you need to play the army, as well as a solid core of narrative to inspire you. The short stories by Josh Reynolds are a welcome addition, and the painting guides are far from comprehensive but will definitely get you started if you want to recreate the paint schemes in the photography. The additional rules for Allegiance Abilities, Spell Lores, and Warscroll Battalions make this a huge value add over just using the free profiles and points values from the Age of Sigmar App and Scrollbuilder.
