About this deal

Home you go! is a game that was actually completely new to me, yet when I shared a picture of us playing it on Facebook loads of people remembered playing it as children, often with their grandparents. I believe this box artwork dated from 1968, but there’s nothing on the box I have to tell me exactly how old it is. The original game features a code of four pegs which are selected from six different colours. This means that there are a total of 1296 different codes that can be generated by the code maker (assuming they can use duplicate colours in their code). Filed Under: Family Games, Games for two players, Spears Games, Vintage Games Tagged With: board games, Home you go, spears games, vintage games Deluxe Master Mind The Slap Ninja controller is modelled after a karate bench. On top there are 3 led lights at either end. One of the “bench legs” is plain, the other has a small button on it and a trigger. Above this “bench leg” is a red coin and a giant ninja hand. TheSlap Ninja game is aimed at children aged 4 and up. I think that this is pretty accurate. Not least because the trigger to control the giant hand takes some effort to squeeze. With the strapline “A second to learn… a lifetime to master” I can happily confirm that Slap Ninja is an incredibly easy game to learn to play. Mastering it however is a totally different story.

The vintage version of Home you go! that we played was published by Spear’s Games. It is designed for children aged 6 up and two or four players. A modern version of the game is available online. Described as being a game of cunning and logic, Master Mind is all about one player setting a code (made up from four coloured pegs) and their opposition trying to work out what it is. Each time they make an attempt to guess, the code maker scores their efforts to give them hints about what they should try next. If you’d like some inspiration for more activities to do with your children, have a look at this. Pin This For Later…The code breaker has up to 12 attempts to break the code and each time they are told (using other coloured pegs) whether they have any pegs of the right colour in the correct position, or just how many pegs they have placed are the right colour but in the wrong position. The student’s aim is to press the red coin without getting a karate chop, AKA MASSIVE SLAP (it doesn’t hurt – I’m just being dramatic) from the master to win a point! Filed Under: Games for two players, Spears Games, Vintage Games Tagged With: spears games, Superpuzzle, vintage games Vintage MB Games – Super 3 I’m pretty sure that most people my age played games in maths lessons at school that involved making pictures from some basic shapes. Either plastic ones if your school had a bit of money, or cut from paper or card if your school had a stretched budget. That’s basically what Superpuzzle from Spear’s Games is. Superpuzzle is something that you an either play on your own, or against another player. The game contains two sets of twenty four pieces (one set red and one green) with each set having 12 each of two different shapes – a rectangle, and what could be described as a rectangle with a corner cut off!

I found the board a little bit fiddly to use, and again I can see how that might have put some players off. Especially if they had big fingers. If you’re interested in vintage board games then why not head over to Facebook and join our new vintage board games group.

Marking the code breaking attempts

With two players it can either be that they both try the same puzzle with the fastest to do so being the winner, or they can work independantly. Moose adored playing this game. It takes no set up, it’s small enough to take in the car and there are no small parts to lose. He has challenged every member of the household and has so far held his position as ninja master. They're based in convenient locations including supermarkets, newsagents and train stations. Plus they're often open late and on Sundays.

Slap Ninja is designed for two players; one the Ninja Master the other student. The aim of the game is for the student to grab the Ninja’s without being slapped by the Ninja’s huge chopping hand.

I actually loved playing deluxe Master Mind once we’d all understood (and agreed) what we had to do. I’ve quite a logical brain and enjoy logic puzzles so to me it all made perfect sense as to how to interpret the code maker’s marking of the code breaking attempts. I can see how this might not be for everyone though.
