About this deal

Violet Design The Wedge

First you have the padding setting which is a simple choice of -10dB, -20dB or no padding. This allows you to use this in a high SPL situation i.e. for micing up guitar amps, bass amps or inside the SPL heavy base drums. Yes, it's not the fastest reacting mic diaphragm around, even within the large diaphragm category, so more detailed mics can be found. But then again, most are more coloured, and cost more. During the test recording’s both pairs of microphones were set up in an ORTF formation, around one metre from the guitar, with the centre position close to the 12th fret. The mic’s were fed into a D.A.V. Electronics Broadhurst Gardens 2 pre amp, enabling identical gain setting for each mic. The output was then fed into the line inputs of a MOTU 1248 interface, recording into Logic X 24 bit at 88.2kHz. These were bounced out as dithered 16bit, 44.1kHz stereo files. They have not been normalised so you may wish to turn the volume up a little. You can find any number of Chinese‑built microphones at the budget end of the market, but SE are one of the very few companies to own a microphone factory in China — rather than having their mics made for them in one of the huge factories in Shanghai or Bejing that specialise in building mics or capsules for third‑parties. Certainly, this has helped SE to build a strong reputation for value at the affordable end of the market, but they also make more up‑market microphones, many with innovative design features, such as the Titan's titanium diaphragm or the Gemini's dual-tube, transformerless circuitry. OverviewOverheads are usually safe, though, and my first test of the sE 4400a was above the drum kit for a live band. Like most large-diaphragm condensers, the 4400a isn’t really designed as a live mic but for me it’s a good way of getting a first impression of a microphone’s overall performance. Placed fairly high above the drummer’s head, the 4400a provided a clear view of the whole kit with bright cymbals and plenty of body from the toms. It was also used on percussion with Slava Grigoryan and the Band of Brothers when I mixed them live recently, and here the 4400a contributed nicely to the performance with a sound that was detailed, appealing and dynamically accurate. It's flat, and non metallic, extended in its' frequency range and free of artifacts or anomalies all along, from bottom to top. The aforementioned sheen is like a very, very gentle high frequency lift, that somehow accurately avoids any peakiness in the obnoxious 3 or 4 kHz region, and any harshness in the 7 to 10 kHz region. It's more air than sizzle. And it's very subtle indeed, just enough to breathe some excitement into sounds being captured, some sort of expensiveness in the sound, but never enough to get in the way or to be hard to dial out with some very light handed eq, or an appropriate preamp and compressor choice. The handy 100Hz bass cut filter also means that you can reduce the proximity effect and cut out any "rumbling" that can occur with movement of air when a mic is placed close to an instrument or sound source. This is also a big help when recording outdoors or in a windy environment. The sE4400a is a multipattern FET condenser in a compact, familiar form factor — it looks a lot like AKG’s C414.

Whether you're searching for a single microphone to carry out all of your recording tasks, or looking to add to an existing library of models with a microphone you can throw into a bag for a session and pull out for almost any application, the 4400a is definitely more than up to the job. Using the T2 on vocals it does a great job, probably better with spoken word and male vocalists. When comparing it to the richness of the sE Gemini II, it just couldn’t compete with a female vocal… acoustic guitar (love the MS!), overheads (especially ORTF positioned!), room mics, toms, leslie speakers, accordions, choirs, piano, ukulele, percussion, woodwinds, etc. I'd sometimes use them for vocals and even voiceovers, violins and violas.

When your project requires a powerful performance with no sacrifice in quality, the Genelec 8030C active studio monitor is designed to exceed your expectations. The 8030C, introduced in 2017, even delivers 4 dB higher SPL and has a lower energy consumption than earlier models of 8030.
