About this deal

Got a Samsung Sound bar just to realise I wasted my money on both tv and Sound bar because they are constantly disconnecting from each other and I tried all the possible fixes invented by human kind (samsung support is completely useless) We did spot some signs of this with the UE55BU8500, too, but the issue is brighter and impacts more of the screen area on the UE50BU8000, at least while watching high dynamic range content. This can be seriously distracting, drawing your attention away from what you’re supposed to be watching as a dark scene unfolds. The clouding can hide shadow details in its extra greyness, too, and it contributes to some small colour uniformity issues as the grey areas slightly adjust the hue of any dark colours that appear behind them.

The operating temperature shows the safe temperature range (from minimum to maximum), within which the display will function flawlessly. Outside this range it might operate improperly and/or fail entirely.

Its panel is a VA type, raising hopes of decent contrast but, predictably, meaning that you’ll see colours and contrast start to reduce if you have to watch the screen from much of an angle from the side. It’s quite distinct through the mid-range and, again, quite decent levels of detail. Voices project forwards well, and they're actually quite nicely balanced – until they start to nudge into the upper frequency range. Once it reaches the higher frequencies, the BU8500 becomes quite hard and edgy, bringing sibilance and even a hint of coarseness to treble sounds. It’s a trait that’s only exacerbated by volume. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits) Information about the maximum vertical viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality.

In addition, the UE55NU8000’s panel is 120Hz, which means it has better motion handling than the 60Hz UE49NU8000. The TV can take advantage of the panel having double the frame rate of standard broadcasting to generate a smoother image. This is called frame interpolation, and it can be highly beneficial when it comes to sport. Most are side-facing – which helps with routing cables – but an HDMI port and digital optical out are rear-facing, so if you want to connect a third source, you may need one of those right-angled HDMI connectors. This clouding issue with HDR sources is much less likely to appear with SDR content; in fact, its good native contrast makes it a rather good SDR display.Ergonomics Information about the ergonomic functions - height adjustment, swivel angles, tilt angles, etc. VESA mount A near bezel-less TV designed to leave you with only the beautiful picture to enjoy. It's also flexible enough to work with your home setup too, thanks to a versatile TV stand. Simply adjust the space between the TV screen and stand to fit your soundbar. Plus, it’s easy to hide TV wires from sight and keep them tidy with the easy clean cable management solution, for a distraction-free viewing experience. For a screen of this size, it doesn’t sound big, giving a sense of being hemmed in. That said, dialogue clarity is good and intelligible, and it has a decent grasp of detail: the creaks and groans of an abandoned village in The Rings of Power are nicely realised. The OTS Lite sound system does a decent job of placing the sounds on screen. HDR10+ assistance helps, but we’re talking subtle amounts here. In Bad Times at the El Royale and The Suicide Squad, colours have a little more depth and range, although the spectacular-looking The Rings of Power appears flat in places – there’s simply not enough contrast, depth or richness in the BU8000’s colours to convey a truly three-dimensional image.

Its screen bezel is a bit ‘budget special’, too, with its slightly chunky width and a brushed finish that’s probably supposed to conjure up thoughts of brushed metal but really just looks like what it is: plastic with thin horizontal lines in it. The interface takes significant configuration, requiring time to remove extraneous advertising links and opt out of data gathering. The storage humidity shows the lower and upper humidity limit, which ensures safe storage of the display. Storing it outside these limits might damage the display. The operating humidity shows the acceptable level of humidity, in which the display will function flawlessly. It sets a lower and an upper humidity level for safe operation and is measured in percentage. The BU8500 can’t go particularly loud either, and bass is thin to say the least. The only thing that saves it from rating very poorly for sound, actually, is that while it’s not really up to keeping action movies company, it does enjoy a nice, engaging, uncluttered tone with relatively undemanding day-to-day TV fare. Verdict The panel sits on a centrally mounted T-shaped stand, styled in dark silver to match the strip along the bottom of the screen. The support column at the rear has a V-shape that gives the impression the screen is floating in mid-air. In terms of image upscaling, the processor is still very efficient. From SD content and live content up to 720p, 1080p and 4K, the TV did not show any obvious artifacts from the upscaling process. But keep in mind that the end result is always very dependent on the quality of the original content.

Information about whether the stand can be dismounted. Usually, this is required for wall mounting. Simply relax and enjoy all the content you love, with a 4K upscaling TV that adapts to give you the best 4K Ultra HD picture. But it doesn’t stop there. The sound adjusts to perfectly suit what you’re watching. A TV drama or the tennis, you’ll really feel part of the action. There are apps galore, with all the big names covered along with Samsung’s own apps (its Health app is front and centre). Despite no Freeview Play, Samsung offers the free streaming-based TV Plus service as an alternative, and all the UK catch-up apps are present. I should also mention that the BU8000 came with a slight panel defect with a green strip running vertically down the screen that would appear every now again, mainly when streaming content. Sound Quality Arguably the most surprising thing about the BU8500 given Samsung’s usual strengths in this area, is that motion doesn’t look quite as cleanly handled as it is on TCL’s 55C735K.

The UE50BU8000 is a native 4K TV that supports HDR in the HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ flavours. Samsung continues to snub Dolby Vision, though, despite the format’s popularity elsewhere. Smart features are provided by Samsung’s Tizen system. It’s the same, all-new version of this system that you get on Samsung’s premium TVs, too, complete with all the key streaming and catch-up apps pretty much anyone could ever want. There’s Samsung’s increasingly curated and therefore increasingly interesting TV Plus roster of all-streamed TV channels too, with the only thing missing being the Freeview Play app for bringing together all the UK’s main terrestrial broadcaster catch-up apps (though these are all available individually). The level of detail is excellent, thanks to some highly effective image processing. Samsung has always produced sophisticated upscaling, and the UE55NU8000 is able to render every last pixel of detail as it scales lower-resolution content to match the UHD panel. Many countries receive market-specific variations of television, of course, due to differences in broadcast standards and so on – so at present there’s no confirmation of what the equivalent Samsung screen will be in other territories. What we can be certain of, though, is that both the United States and Australia will be getting a range of competitively priced, competitively specified Samsung 4K LED TVs that are more than a little reminiscent of the BU8500 series.
