About this deal

The difference between them though is that natural pearls are extremely rare and are formed by mollusks in the wild, compared to much more readily available cultured pearls which are formed by mollusks in commercial pearl farms.

Warming waters threaten all mollusks, including pearl-making saltwater clams from the Pteriidae family. These species may adapt in unexpected ways as a response. (Smithsonian) Pearls are perhaps the most gifted gems in human history. For good reason, too. They have romantic connections to the sea, and are among the few perfectly round gems found in nature. They’re also soft enough to be worked (to be drilled for string, most commonly) and yet hard enough to remain durable for lifetimes. Pink pearls can be found naturally in the wild. Their occurrence is a result of certain mollusks secreting nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl, which forms around an irritant and creates the distinctive pink coloration. What Is the Average Size of a Pink Pearl? Just like other natural pearls, scallop pearls can exhibit various shapes, such as round, off-round, rain-drop shaped, baroque, or oval.

Distinguishing between natural pearls and cultured pearls

Size: Pink pearls can vary greatly in size, from tiny seed pearls less than a millimeter in diameter to large examples several millimeters across. The size of a pearl does not necessarily affect its value, though larger pearls are generally more rare and therefore more valuable. It’s worth noting that different pearl type has its own unique characteristics and benchmarks. Therefore, you cannot simply take each value factor and use it to assess two different types of pearls. Blue Akoya pearls are a remarkable and uncommon variety known for their stunning round shape and brilliant, reflective luster. While Akoya pearls are traditionally rose, white with silver, or ivory overtones, blue Akoya pearls are a rarity due to their distinctive characteristics.

Overtones: Some pink pearls may also exhibit a secondary color, or “overtone,” visible on the surface of the pearl. This can add depth and complexity to the pearl’s color. Conch pearls are usually oval-shaped and pink in color. The most coveted tone for conch pearls is dark pastel pink. The finest examples display wave-like flame structures and have unique shimmer. The exceptionally rare abalone pearl is formed by abalone mollusks and a natural abalone pearl can take eight to ten years to produce. Abalone pearls come in a range of colors and are usually baroque in shape. The diameter of Edison pearls ranges from approximately 0.51 inches to 0.67 inches, allowing them to grow to such impressive sizes because they develop individually. While you can find Edison pearls in various colors, purple ones are the rarest and most sought-after. Other available colors include pink, white, plum, and cream. But hold on – notice we use the word “potentially”. That’s right! Not all natural pearls are worth more than cultured pearls. Why? Because the beauty and value of a pearl relies on many other factors, such as size, shape, colour, lustre and nacre quality. The most valuable fancy pearls have cream body colors, with rose overtone and green or blue as a secondary overtone. Edison Pearl is named after American scientist Thomas Edison. While commenting on his research, he once said, “There are two things you can’t get in my laboratory – diamonds and pearls.” Nacre is a type of rind that gives pearls their pearly sheen. But it’s also special for another reason. The material’s recipe, made of organic secretions with a carbon-based mineral known as aragonite, makes it exceptionally strong. To test whether a pearl is real or fake, try the "Tooth Test." Rub the pearl across the surface of your teeth. Real pearls will feel slightly gritty or rough. Most imitations will feel smooth.
