Kerenyi, Gods of the Greeks, 1951, p. 175, noting G. Kaibel, Epigrammata graeca ex lapidibus collecta, 817, where the other god's name, both father and son of Hermes, is obscured; Hyginus ( Fabulae 160) makes Hermes the father of Pan. At Ancient Origins, we believe that one of the most important fields of knowledge we can pursue as human beings is our beginnings. And while some people may seem content with the story as it stands, our view is that there exist countless mysteries, scientific anomalies and surprising artifacts that have yet to be discovered and explained. Coronato, Rocco. “The Emergence of Priapism in the Two Gentlemen of Verona”. In Proteus: The Language of Metamorphosis, ed. Carla Dente, George Ferzoco, Miriam Gill and Marina Spunta. Aldershot: Ashgate, 2005, chapter 8, 93–101. This god is worshipped where goats and sheep pasture or there are swarms of bees; but by the people of Lampsacus he is more revered than any other god, being called by them a son of Dionysus and Aphrodite. [23] Given these grim figures it is no surprise that the state was concerned about population. Rome was unambiguous about its impatience to see children produced. At the census husbands were required to swear an oath that conception was their earnest intention. In 18 BC the Emperor Augustus enacted laws to encourage marriage and having children, including establishing adultery as a crime. These laws were unpopular and it isn’t certain if they were very effective. They did, however, lead to his own daughter, Julia, being banished to a small island.

Let’s take a look now at the various stages of producing children, which was so important in the Roman world because of the high death rate in infancy and the necessity to retain a stable population. Long after the fall of Rome and the rise of Christianity, Priapus continued to be invoked as a symbol of health and fertility. The 13th century Lanercost Chronicle, a history of northern England and Scotland, records a "lay Cistercian brother" erecting a statue of Priapus ( simulacrum Priapi statuere) in an attempt to end an outbreak of cattle disease. Priapos" is a title given to Eros Phanes in the Orphic Hymn to Protogonos, the "firstborn" god of the Greeks who came from the Cosmic Egg. [11] In The Orphic Hymn to Dionysus, [12] Dionysus is given epithets similar to Protogonos and was thought of as the incarnation of Protogonos, [13] so he was considered both the father of fertility god Priapus and also the incarnation of the primordial Priapus. A number of notable icons depicting Priapus existed throughout ancient Greece and Rome. For instance, the travel-writer Pausanias noted that a statue of Priapus at Mount Helicon in Boeotia was "worth seeing." [13] One of the most famous images of Priapus that is still extant is that from the House of the Vettii in Pompeii. This particular image is a wall fresco in which Priapus is weighing his phallus against a bag full of money. By all indications, it appears that his phallus is heavier (see image above).

The statue is 179 cm tall and is dressed in a toga exigua, which consists of a short-sleeved tunic beneath a close-fitting toga thrown over the left arm and shoulder while leaving the right arm free for mobility. It may seem unusual for a god of gardening to be so closely associated with sailing, but the reason for the link comes from ancient ideas about the body.As well as the collection known as the Priapeia mentioned above, Priapus was a frequent figure in Latin erotic or mythological verse. Priapus became associated with the rustic gods of Greece such as Pan and the satyrs. While he shared their lustful nature and connection to agriculture, his origins were likely in Anatolia and he was never as widely recognized in Greece itself as the older rural deities.

McGinn, Thomas A.J. (2004). The Economy of Prostitution in the Roman World. Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan Press. ISBN 978-0472113620. Anyone who has had much exposure to ancient Roman culture will know that the phallus and phallic symbols are found everywhere and in the most unlikely contexts. As well as being a symbol of male power, fertility and sexuality, they are used to invoke good fortune. They are carved into masonry, on horses’ harness fittings, from Pompeii we have bizarre oil lamps in the shape of winged phalluses, and they were a popular talisman for men’s jewellery. (Modern pendants descended from these talismans have a different form - when the pendants were later banned for being obscene, the phallus was replaced with a shark’s tooth.) There was also a kind of statue called a herm where male genitalia were carved half way up a column with a bust or head on top. As well the phallic symbols carved into masonry at Vindolanda and along Hadrian’s Wall, a Priapus statue was unearthed at Vindolanda. Priapus is a fertility god; a huge erect phallus is (literally) his outstanding characteristic. Our statue is one of only two found in Roman Britain so far. This, the god that was most identified by his own prominent anatomy was the perfect aid for sailors. He was already associated with protection, but his symbolic association with territory and being turned in a different direction than intended made him a fitting patron for men at sea. Priapus joined Pan and the satyrs as a spirit of fertility and growth, though he was perennially frustrated by his impotence. In a ribald anecdote told by Ovid, [8] he attempted to rape the goddess Hestia but was thwarted by an ass, whose braying caused him to lose his erection at the critical moment and woke Hestia. The episode gave him a lasting hatred of asses and a willingness to see them killed in his honour. [9] The emblem of his lustful nature was his permanent erection and his large penis. Another myth states that he pursued the nymph Lotis until the gods took pity on her and turned her into a lotus plant. [10] An archaeological dig at a prestigious residence on the slopes of Regio V, overlooking Via del Vesuvio in Pompeii, has unearthed “in elegantly decorated rooms” a fresco of Priapus, a god of Graeco-Roman mythology, weighing his massive member on a scale. The sitting, enthroned figure would have stood roughly 12 meters (40 feet) tall based on the size of the surviving components. The head is over 212 meters tall, and each foot is nearly 2 meters long. ISBN 0-226-06455-7 Despite being the son of two of the highest-ranking Olympians, the child Priapus was exiled from the mountain and disowned by his mother.
