About this deal

The pandemic has been a difficult time for many in Shetland including our local charities and their fundraising efforts. McGovern admitted sexist attitudes and her own body image issues at the time were part of the reason she decided to be photographed in the nude. For the few still left in Peña Zafra de Abajo, the success of the calendar has been made all the more poignant by the quarries that surround the hamlet, often leaving remaining residents battling against the constant noise of mining activities and clouds of dust, said Nicolás. I don't think anyone could look at that calendar and tell you who's gay and who was straight ... even though many of them were.

Ferguson-Cook was one of around 15 players (including some who didn't participate in the calendar at all) who travelled to Perth to film the toothpaste commercial. It also led to more commercial opportunities off the pitch, including a cancer awareness billboard, a partnership with a disability advocacy group, invitations to AFL launches, and more photo shoot invitations for publications like WHO Magazine and Sports Illustrated. She remembers her mum running around to several newsagencies buying up copies of the calendar once it had been released, and still has Alicia's photo framed and hanging in her house. Others say it was a Melbourne businessman who approached Fisher, offering to add the Matildas in his catalogue of nude calendars and other raunchy material he published in Australia.

They build it up in their minds but the group shot really helps. They have quite a good time in the end. Aside from a brief encounter with an old man outside Kings, which Nancy remembers as far more embarrassing for him than them (they all waved), the shoot wasn’t at all awkward for the girls. Nancy was relieved that the photographer wasn’t a Cambridge student, but a professional photographer smoking his way through the shoot. Between the two of them, they can’t work out whether the smoke was being used to blur the photo or the photographer was just a chainsmoker. Looking at the calendar, I can’t see any smoke, so it might be the latter. Nancy says that “it might be more weird for teams who don’t shower together,” and the boys agree. “It’s all stuff we’ve seen before,” Nancy laughs. “It’s a classic stereotype, isn’t it, that rugby boys all love to get naked together,” says Charlie. “We were going to do it anyway so we may as well do it for charity”. While some of the players who posed did identify as LGBTQIA+, they were presented in a way that shattered assumptions about what queer women in sport looked like. The only people who knew us were within the soccer community, and compared to what it is now, it was very small. But what the calendar did was put our name out there. We may not have been competitive internationally as we are now, but people knew who we were. The photographs in this calendar are all hunting related, and the people featured are Worcestershire supporters or hunt staff!” — Rachel Maddox

McGovern still keeps a copy of the notorious calendar in her home outside of Sydney, so what does her family think 24 years on? As news of the calendar travels, messages have come pouring in from across Spain, where rural depopulation threatens more than half of the country’s surface area. “There were weeks where I didn’t know whether to cry from happiness or sadness,” she said, citing the many who shared their own struggles to stave off the demise of their hamlets. “We found out that we weren’t the only ones in this situation.” There were some feminists that felt that we had sold out," she says. "I totally respect that opinion and not all of the team took part in the calendar photoshoot. I did it for my own personal reasons. And then I did it for the greater good of the team. I think we achieved that objective." It's a point in time. It's something that has a bit of historical significance for the team, whether you like it or not, whether you agree with it or not.The best thing is now the players don't have to do anything like that because they get the recognition. People will see them as footballers."

Berry recalls several Matildas players being invited to a Liberal Party fundraising event at a famous Melbourne-based club, where the AWSA was able to form relationships with politicians and potential future donors. It's for a great cause though. The time I feel proud is when I go down to give the cheque in." Halwill WI That's the question the board of the Australian Women's Soccer Association (AWSA), the national governing body of women's football at the time, was faced with as they tried to get the Matildas ready for one of the most significant football tournaments of their lives.

Well, who is to say that professional (or wannabe professional) glamour models can’t raise money for charity with a calendar? In this case, the recipients are Mental Health Awareness and the Chestnut Appeal for Men’s Health. https://ukcalendargirls.co.uk/supporting-charities/ The organisation Running at 40+ has its own calendar of naked female runners, with money raised going to the women’s charity Refuge. https://runningat40plus.com/shop/ols/products/the-naked-runner-female-calendar-2023 She had to get written permission from her parents to take part in the shoot, which happened in a lecture hall at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Her parents fully supported her decision, trusting her judgement and maturity. I've got my photo framed up in my home now. When I look at it, it's an image for me that's frozen in time because of what I was going through as an athlete. It represented so much.
