About this deal

In campaign games, the effects of the “metagame” outside of battle is divided into a pre- and post-battle sequence, where you apply resources to your gang before a game or treat injuries and collect rewards after a game. This article aims to highlight key aspects of the Necromunda rules, many of which are overlooked by new players. Advice on the internet often seems to focus on choosing certain weapons and skills, or devolves into discussions about the admittedly serious balance problems in Necromunda. I think that a lot of advice misses the point. It’s easy and obvious to try and improve performance in your games by taking the best tools – and Gang-building is a big part of the game, so much, in fact, that we’ve written twelve articles on it! However, there is a dearth of good information on how to actually play the game well. Before a new player can learn to play well, there are some unique and interesting rules which have to be understood. The Issue When you have all the basics ready for getting into the game, you can start building your gang. This is the best part of the game (apart from actually playing games, of course), and there are so many options. Genghis Cohen : As with the Dark Uprising release, this is emphatically not a new edition of Necromunda. Almost everything remains unchanged, there are just a few FAQ-type issues that seem to have been tweaked:

For all the dice look very similar at first glance, there are actually 4 different types of dice in the box.Weaknesses: …but you can also roll poorly on its stats and have it be a total dud. The Psychic powers don’t really do anything, and your fighters will rarely be anything more than middle-of-the-road. Related Articles But if you are looking for a skirmish game with a campaign system that has a bit more “crunch” and depth, look no furhter than Necromunda. It is amazing! Playing Necromunda A lot of scenery is needed! This region is essentially what hive dwellers might be able to see from their apartment windows if they had apartments, or indeed windows. So say goodbye to this view, as we’ll soon be forging south into the Great Equatorial Wastes where all manner of opportunities to get rich await – alongside even more ways to die!

In 8th Edition the concept of area effect weapons was eliminated entirely; former blast weapons instead delivered a random number of hits to the target unit. This effectively killed the utility of blast weapons by drastically increasing their variance. Things improved somewhat in 9th Edition with the addition of the Blast keyword; now the number of hits dealt to the target changed depending on the size of the unit, but the days of placing pie plates on models are long gone. New Book, New environment, new campaign. Like the Dominion Campaign, gangs are fighting for territory – only now it’s gone big time… and map-based. For the Ash Wastes, it’s all about roads. Roads are how your gang initially makes a pittance of income. Controlling roads between two settlements allows a player to set up Trade Routes, which is how your gang gets cash with an added trading bonus that either adds more Creds to your income or other boons. All of the Trade Route bonuses depend on where the route starts and ends. For the Ash Waste Nomads, noted as always being Raiders, controlling roads also gives them a small amount of income, but instead of having Trade Routes, they gain income for disrupting them. The rules for running and customizing Skirmish games can be found in the Necromunda Rulebook. Campaign Games in Necromunda

There are 8 skill sets in Necromunda (as well as one unique skill set for each gang that has it’s own dedicated book), and any fighter type that gets a free skill at the beginning of the game has specific skill sets it can choose from. Necromunda is a wargame that really concerns itself with the minutia of shooting people with sci-fi weaponry, and this is strongly reflected in the array and volume of wargear that comes in the box. Each scenario has it’s own victory conditions, but many of them end the game when one player has no more fighters to activate on the battlefield. Afterwards, victory points are scored, and a winner is declared. Improving your Gang The Ash Wastes set is the most current and complete starter set for Necromunda. It heralded the current “season” of the game, where many fights take place outside of the Hive cities in the Great Equatorial Wastes, with fighters riding vehicles and raiding settlements. You can read all about this new season of Necromunda in our Ash Wastes guide here.

All in all, there are so many aspects to building a gang that it can seem like an insurmountable task at first. It’s worth it, though: If you take the time to understand the different systems, you can end up with a gang full of character and interesting tactical options. Ways to Play Necromunda It’s worth noting that the imagination of the rules writers for Necromunda far exceeds the company’s capacity for producing miniatures, and while many of the different additions to your gang detailed in this section do have miniatures, often produced by GW’s sister company Forge World, many others have rules but no models yet. Feel free to use any model you have that could fit the decription of the mercenary or creature you want to field in your gang. Hive Scum are cheap fighters that you can use to fill out your roster. You can equip them with simple weapons, their statistics aren’t great, and they don’t gain experience like the rest of your gang: You only hire them for a battle at a time.

More about this book later, but it is a BEAST. TLDR is that this is a complete, updated rulebook. Even for games in the underhive, this book has you covered (save for the Dominion campaign). We’ll also cover the campaign and tactics later in the article. What exactly is the Ash Wastes box? Mercifully, the assembly instructions that come in the set feature suggested builds for all of the ganger models. So whilst there is absolutely space for you to go as off piste as you like, Necromunda: Hive War is not a completely ruthless introduction to in-depth skirmish wargaming. While it may be daunting to some people to build a gang from scratch, a good starting point for most gangs is to take a leader, two champs, a juve, and four gangers. Creating a gang to your taste might result in a different composition, but seven or eight bodies at inception is awfully helpful for winning games. Think about where you’re likely to actually play your games, too. All flamers might seem cool, but you’ll get dumpstered in a Sector Mechanicus game without some serious shenanigans.Necromunda is set on a planet where billions of humans live in gigantic spire cities called Hives under horrible conditions. Unless you live at the top of these hive cities, you rarely taste fresh air or enjoy natural sunlight. Between weapons, skills, statistics and fighter types, your gang can almost feel more like an adventuring party from a role-playing game than a squad of soldiers from a tabletop game. To some players, this will be too much complexity, but if you like the storytelling aspects of tabletop games, few games currently available give you as many options as Necromunda. There is no reason this has to be the case. If one player sees they are in a weaker position, they can and should use the Prone rules, as detailed above, and patient maneuvering to get into what they consider an ideal position before really starting to open up the game. This specifically applies to more open boards and close combat focused gangs trying to close with shooting focused opponents. New players frequently try to run their models forward as fast as possible while engaging with any shooters they have, hoping for the best. This is not necessary when you’re under no time pressure. Hive War is a slightly older starter set, but it has everything you need if you just want to play a self-contained game with two players in the Underhive. It contains:
