Generally these pedals cover largely fairly exotic and many discontinued boutique amps - yet a handful of classics too. I’m not familiar with all of the original amp inspirations, but I know a reasonable number of these. It has to be said that the simulation / modelling is pretty faithful and each one of these distinctly has the flavour of its particular inspiration amp. As to how close the simulation is - is up to you to decide. I personally don’t get too hung up on the degree of authenticity - I’m really just interested if there is sufficient flavour there and if I can get it to sound good for me. For each of these amps there is a variance in the degree of how much range is captured and how well the pedal suits its larger context. As an example, the 004 Day Tripper AC30-style model is well suited to chimey Beatles and U2 Edge tones, but does not go quite saturated enough to cover the full Brian May experience. I expect this is true to a degree with most of these pedals - as is always the case when you’re trying to cover a highly complex multi-channel amp in a single pedal.

The Preamp Live can be used in a variety of different ways: integrated with your amp via the four-cable method, direct into a PA, or even hooked up to both amp and PA at once, with a cabinet-simulated DI running from the XLR output and the preamp signal with cab sim disabled routed to your amplifier’s effects return. You can use the effect loop as a standard serial loop (letting you create a standard signal chain), or you can switch to A/B mode. This special mode lets you use the effects loop with the analogue preamp section of your amp, removing the Mooer Live's digital preamp and creating more tonal possibilities.

You can either use the noise gate to eliminate unwanted noise from external devices you connect, or noise caused by high-gain settings. Connecting in this way also enables the use of probably the most impressive feature of the bunch - tone capture. Essentially, you find a preamp model that sounds close to the way your amp sounds. The Preamp Live amylases the two sounds, and using digital witchcraft it adjusts the model to sound frighteningly close to your amp. You can then save the result as a preset and use it without having to take your amp with you. We did it in the accompanying video with a Laney Lionheart and the results were jaw-dropping.
