Along the High Street and intersecting alleys are half-timbered houses and Georgian facades that conceal much older buildings.

The headline attractions is the enormous ocean tank with an underwater tunnel to see shoals of brightly coloured tropical fish from below. Also worth a visit is Hastings’ Country Park, which is a lovely local nature reserve just out of the city to the east. It certainly makes for a great trip, so if you’re looking for a top weekend or day trip from London (or from anywhere in the southeast) then I can’t recommend Hastings enough.
