About this deal

The Nereids were known to be some of the most beautiful creatures to exist in the time of ancient Greece. Nereids (sometimes called sea nymphs) were beautiful creatures who were often depicted as either having tails or legs depending on if they were in the water. They were often thought to be found accompanying Poseidon and were sometimes known to carry his trident. In addition to these goddesses, many of the minor sea goddesses inherited her characteristics as well. A great example of this can be found with the nereids and sea nymphs. They are often depicted as having both legs and fish tails depending on where they were located. The selkies of Icelandic mythology are also known to have similar stories, though instead of a fish tail they are thought to have complete seal skins. Mermaids Around the World Among the highest grossing Chinese theatrical releases ever, Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid” is a visually luxurious exploration of mermaid society and amphibious romance as weird as it is endearing. After property mogul Liu Xuan (Deng Chao) begins developing a nature preserve where a group of mermaids secretly lives, the cunning Shan (Lin Yun) attempts to assassinate him. But the pair’s electric dynamic soon begets a romance that puts Shan and her home, as well as Liu and his career, at risk. The vibrant colors and costuming are worth diving in for alone. Another type of mermaid that is often referenced is the Siren. Although sirens are one of the most common types of mermaid that is recognized in modern day, it is thought that the mermaid stories influenced this creature in ways that were not meant to happen.

We all know Ariel from the little mermaid, but here are some more red-haired mermaid names you can use in your stories:

Photograph: Leon Foggitt/The Observer Though stories of mermen are perhaps more ancient than those of mermaids, it is thought that the first mermaid was recorded in 1000 BC by the ancient Assyrians. Her name was Atargatis, and she was known to be the fertility goddess and the chief goddess of Northern Assyria. Atargatis, the first mermaid

For as long as she can remember, twelve-year-old Emily Windsnap has lived on a boat. And, oddly enough, for just as long, her mother has seemed anxious to keep her away from the water. But when Mom finally agrees to let her take swimming lessons, Emily makes a startling discovery – about her own identity, the mysterious father she’s never met, and the thrilling possibilities and perils shimmering deep below the water’s surface. Here are some of my favourite, quirky, fascinating and fabulous stories about mermaids... 1. Julián is a Mermaid by Jessica Love (featuring Julián, the world's greatest mermaid) One year from the day she encountered the sailors, she allowed herself to be captured by the men off the coast of Ireland. They brought her ashore and was baptized under the name ‘Muirgen’, which means ‘sea born.’ She died immediately afterwards and ascended into Heaven. Her story was preserved and spread throughout Ireland – especially by those who marveled at that fact that she was willing to give up 300 more years of life for a chance to reach heaven. Thessalonike To find yourself in a job you adore, something that feeds your energy and has you smiling, rather than drains you – this is the ultimate outcome of the Entrepreneur Angel Card. The age-old question: do mermaids have powers? The answer is yes! Based on many interpretations it is safe to say mermaids have powers. This is from a mythological standpoint, however. If mermaids happen to be real, it is less likely that they would have magic powers, as no creature has been confirmed in having magic powers.Mermaids are known to be creatures who embody the duality of the sea. As the waters of the ocean can be both gentle and destructive, so can the nature of the mermaids. These maidens are known to have caused much mischief and destruction at the expense of humans. However, there are also times that mermaids have been very helpful towards humans. Some legends speak of mermaids who have saved sailors and their ships during storms or have helped humans cure illnesses that earlier civilizations had no knowledge of. Though many mermaids in the UK region were seen as vengeful and malevolent, the merpeople who lived near the Isle of Man were thought to be much more friendly towards human beings. These mermaids were known as Ben-Varrey and were known to have been very generous towards humans. Mermaids were known to reward humans who helped them in times of need or were generous towards them. They were often said to give humans tremendous wealth – whether it was through the location of a grand treasure or another form of prosperity. Li Ban Imagine a world where you could swim with mermaids, visit the library of Atlantis, and go on an underwater adventure to visit all your favorite sea creatures. Some tales depict mermaids as being able to grant wishes. Such versions of mermaids include the ceasg, of Scottish folklore, the merrow, of Irish folklore. In the show Mako Mermaids, to become a mermaid you must fall into the moon pool during a full moon. Once this magic takes place you begin to have magic powers and the ability to transform into a mermaid once in the water.

Ondina: Ordina means “little wave” in Latin. This is a great name for a young, innocent mermaid. Particularly one that might start off weak in your story, but then grow stronger as the events play out.She had always enjoyed swimming, learning “before I could really walk” in the sea near her father’s house in Mullion on the Lizard peninsula. “It’s otherworldly, being under the water,” she says. She would sometimes see mermaids off the coast or at events. “I thought they were wonderful,” she says. “But I’d closed myself off. I thought I was too old.” It’s star Halle Bailey, appearing in her first leading role, who makes the best case for why this classic Disney tale needed to be made into a live-action affair. Just look at her face, so expressive and so open, so deeply and wonderfully human and alive. There are some things even the most lovingly rendered pieces of hand-drawn animation just can’t match, and Bailey’s emotive skill is one of them. (And her stunning singing? Further icing on the “this young woman is a movie star” cake.) —KE It’s otherworldly, being underwater’: Tasha Fairey at Porthleven, Cornwall. Photograph: Leon Foggitt/The Observer I read a proof copy of this recently and it is spectacular. Set on the real island of Arranmore in Ireland, it follows Fionn Boyle on a wild adventure filled with magical memory-filled candles, the sorceress Morrigan, and hints at an army of merrows beneath the waves (I have my fingers crossed they will surface in the sequel). Technically this book doesn't feature mermaids at all, but it does star a zombie goldfish, which is a mutant fish... and what is also essentially a mutant fish? Correct! A mermaid. (It's not cheating.) 5. Peter Pan by J.M Barrie (featuring traditional mermaids playing dodgeball)

For slightly younger readers, this book series is comedy gold and you'll zip through Frankie's adventures, laughing hysterically as you go.Vision Sharing: This is a power that is unique to Mimmi and Zac and is possibly only shared between siblings. mermaid, a fabled marine creature with the head and upper body of a human being and the tail of a fish. Similar divine or semidivine beings appear in ancient mythologies (e.g., the Chaldean sea god Ea, or Oannes). In European folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) and mermen were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical and prophetic powers. They loved music and often sang. Though very long-lived, they were mortal and had no souls. Mermaids are often known to drag humans down into the depths of the ocean, killing them in the process. Although there are some cases where this act is without a doubt intentional, there are others that make humans question if they actually mean to kill the mortals they drag underwater. This is likely from tales of seemingly friendly mermaids that kill humans by dragging them under. It has been speculated that mermaids may not understand that humans can’t breathe underwater, or simply forget in their excitement to take them to their realm. This theory is supported by the fact that mermaids have been known to allow men into their underwater kingdoms and shower them with lavish gifts while they remain in these realms. Every hundred years, the mermaids come to shore. And you can meet one if you follow the steps in this book! First, you’ll need to make a crown for her using shells, coral, grass, driftwood, and tumbled glass. If you stand by the ocean, she’ll see you and you can give her the crown, maybe even giving you a fin so you can swim with her. Rhyming, colorful, and playful, this is sure to inspiring lots of crown-making crafts.
