Hydrangeas are usually fairly resistant to pests and diseases. However occasionally one of the following may give your plant some trouble. Pests I have four potted hydrangea macrophyllas and during cold frosty spells, I relocate them to a sheltered spot. If your hydrangea is not a dwarf or compact variety it may need repotting again in time, or alternatively, you can prune it to the size you want. Make sure you prune it at the right time of year for the variety or you may lose the next years blooms. Pruning Advice We would recommend a natural and organic spray such as Bug Clear forFruit and Veg Gun or Vitax Plant Guard Pest and Disease Control.

I’ve seen hydrangea macrophyllas grown in heavy shade before and they produced very small and weak flowers on leggy stems, they didn’t look appealing at all.

In spring, I usually deadhead any flowers I left on over winter for frost protection. While I wouldn’t prune off any buds, I would prune out any dead or ill-looking stems. I would then remove any leaves or debris from the shrub’s crown and rake out an inch or so of soil from under the plant and then top up with fresh compost and Vitax slow-release fertiliser. Early Summer:

Large, clean lacecap blooms of shell pink, or mauve-blue on acid soil. Very free-flowering when well grown. Florets are irregular with one sepal larger than the rest. The varieties can be separated 4 main groups: big-leaf, smooth-leaf, panicle and oakleaf varieties. These four groups are all relatively easy to care for and provide a wonderful summer display. You’ll find a break down of these different varieties below. Add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Do not let the mulch touch the base of the plant to reduce the risk of rotting.Rain water is naturally acidic to varying degrees so if your hydrangeasare blue, and you want to keep them to that colour, collected rainwater isfar better than tap water.
