About this deal

During the late Renaissance, two characteristic shapes of hurdy-gurdies developed. The first was guitar-shaped and the second had a rounded lute-type body made of staves. The lute-like body is especially characteristic of French instruments.

I did see Donovan in concert in Newcastle City Hall in the early 1980's. He sat on a chair and sang his songs with his acoustic guitar with Danny Thompson, who used to be in Pentangle, playing double bass behind him. Of course, it was all about nostalgia, for his time was between the years of 1965 and 1970. "This is the first song I ever wrote," he said, as he introduced Catch the Wind. Many thanks to u/elektrovolt and u/sanneke34 for making this possible. Your commitment to creating an affordable hurdy gurdy that a person can be proud to own and play is a game changer. I imagine this is a labor of love, and please know that at least the one you’ll be sending my way will be truly a loved instrument. I’ve been waiting for this for 30 years and appreciate that it finally could happen. Thank you! Leopold Mozart (1719-1789) – Die Bauern Hochzeit, a work written for 6 strings, 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 horns, hurdy gurdy and bagpipes. The hurdy-gurdy is the instrument played by Der Leiermann, the street musician portrayed in the last, melancholy song of Schubert's Winterreise. It is also featured and played prominently in the film Captains Courageous (1937) as the instrument of the character Manuel, played by Spencer Tracy.

The hurdy-gurdy tradition is well-developed particularly in Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Southeastern France and Ukraine. In Ukraine, it is known as the lira or relia. It was and still is played by professional, often blind, itinerant musicians known as lirnyky. Their repertoire has mostly para-religious themes. Most of it originated in the Baroque period. In Eastern Ukraine, the repertoire includes unique historic epics known as dumy and folk dances. In France, a player is called un sonneur de vielle (literally "a sounder of vielle"), un vielleux or un vielleur. Jean-Jacques Naudot (1725) Huitième oeuvre de Mr Naudot. It might be suggested that we're trying to steer you away from a kit so you'll buy one of our instruments instead. We want people to have good instruments that are fun to play and have a good sound, and we know how difficult such instruments are to make. It certainly didn't happen for us on the first try: it took about five years of research, and every instrument we build teaches us something new. We'd rather see a few good hurdy-gurdies out there than a lot of bad ones: there are quite enough of those already. But you know what, Donovan? You ARE a total dork, and that’s why I love you. And somehow the essence of that fact—and the idea that only a man with a little moondust in his brain could compose such stirring music about mermaids, fairies, and staying groovy—still shines through. And that’s why I can’t give this book less than 3 stars: one for being—in his writing if not his facts—shamefully honest, one for adapting the book as a love story (awwww), and one for ending the story in 1970.Donovan was among a number of stars who spent time in India at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. As Shirley MacLaine put it, "The people here introspect and search." Search for what? She said she did not know, but what was important was the search. p. 193. It is imperative for a serious young student of music to choose at least six geniuses of the genre you are wishing to join. You must learn all of the repertoire of at least two of them. By emulating the masters you will find your own voice. p. 62. Azumi, Eric (27 April 2017). "Hurdy Gurdy History: History Of The Hurdy Gurdy". Lark in the Morning . Retrieved 9 August 2023. This is Donovan's account of his life of sex, drugs, and music stardom, until 1970, when he burned out and dropped out, at age 24. He tells us of his concert tours, thirteen hit singles, two hundred of his songs recorded by other artists. p. 287. Scriptores ecclesiastici de musica sacra potissimum, 3 vols., ed.
