About this deal

For Gerber it really comes down to the Dime. It’s a tiny little tool that includes a lot of useful tools. Gerber used a standard butterfly fold design with a little set of pliers as the main tool. It’s basically a full size multi tool that Gerber shrunk down to fit on your keychain. The Gerber Dime is very popular and has a lot of dedicated fans but it doesn’t always hold up against some of Leatherman’s products. The Gerber Dime product picture The Leatherman Micra is just about the first keychain tool to hit the market. It has been continuously available since the mid 90’s and is one of the best tools of its kind. It has a pair of scissors rather than pliers for a main tool and includes things like a knife, attached tweezers, and screwdrivers. It has all metal construction similar to the the Gerber Dime but it just feels a bit better made. The MP600 uses a slide out, one handed opening design for its pliers. All the other tools can only be opened once the pliers are deployed and the handles opened out. We’d go over the included tools, but it would take a while. Gerber currently offers more than 20 different versions of the MP600 customized for any type of work imaginable. Read More On receiving the Wave Plus, the first thing that caught my eye was its compact design. It’s only a tad heavier than the Curl but significantly lighter than the Surge, making it the perfect companion for my belt as I trail through rugged terrains. The 8-ounce mark indeed hits the sweet spot between utility and carry-ability, echoing my sentiment for a tool that’s there when I need it without being a burden. The entirety of the apparatuses inside the handle will naturally secure set up, limiting the number of wounds that would return from devices collapsing over onto your fingers. At a first look, Gerber has got a lot of things right with this new tool but I think they’ve missed the mark in a couple of critical areas.

As amazing as it can be to have one of these, multi-tools are often very expensive. Though, you won’t face this issue if you have Gerber Truss. If you are looking for a device that consists of multiple tools meant for different work, then Gerber is the answer. Its price range is affordable and decent for the various facilities that come with the device. A warrant is also given out, which makes it attractive to own. Because Gerber has developed this multi-device from a solitary bit of steel, the sturdiness ought to be on-point. Main Features

Gerber seems to have a thing for bridge terminology for this multi-tool product line. The Truss (a post, rafter or strut that supports a bridge or roof) is an evolution of the Suspension multi-tool (like a suspension bridge, think the Golden Gate Bridge). Apparently, the Truss “bridges the gap between problem and solution”. Clever huh? Well, let’s see how clever it really is! Carry-ability That brings me to the name. If there’s a connection here, maybe Gerber can make it more clear because it seems rather arbitrary. Again, these are personal complaints and you may disagree. If you do, go ahead and snatch one of these up because the Truss is still a useful tool and a considerable bargain. Verdict

The smaller Suspension-NXT weighs even less, advertised at under 6.5 ounces. Its updated features are the same as the Truss’, yet it’s longer and has three more functions than the 12-function Suspension.

Read More One handed opening tools are becoming more and more popular as new models are released. Gerber got into the field early and incorporated slide out pliers into a lot of their designs but Leatherman wasn’t asleep at the wheel either. They released an innovative multi tool designed to allow one handed opening of every tool. Lets see how these two, the Gerber Center Drive and Leatherman OHT, compare. The best place to start when comparing two tool makers is with their flagship tools. For Leatherman that has to be the Wave+ and for Gerber the MP600. Both are full sized tools with lots of bells and whistles. Let’s start with Leatherman. Leatherman Wave Plus At the same time, the Truss definitely doesn’t feel cheap. At 8.4 ounces, it’s apparent that this multitool was built to take a beating and there’s not a spec of plastic to be found outside of the lanyard loop. I also like that all the tools open outboard, so users don’t have to mess with unfolding the handle every time they want to get to something besides the pliers.

Another thing to note is that the Truss fixes the biggest issue on the Suspension. The Suspension has suffered BADLY with broken plier-stops, whether the screws break or the stop breaks, the Suspension had that weakest link. The Truss fixes this by incorporating the plier-stops into the handle-frame themselves. Another much welcomed addition to the new Gerber Truss. N2 - A field experiment was conducted on a real continuous steel Gerber-truss bridge with artificial damage applied. This article summarizes the results of the experiment for bridge damage detection utilizing traffic-induced vibrations. It investigates the sensitivities of a number of quantities to bridge damage including the identified modal parameters and their statistical patterns, Nair’s damage indicator and its statistical pattern and different sets of measurement points. The modal parameters are identified by autoregressive time-series models. The decision on bridge health condition is made and the sensitivity of variables is evaluated with the aid of the Mahalanobis–Taguchi system, a multivariate pattern recognition tool. Several observations are made as follows. For the modal parameters, although bridge damage detection can be achieved by performing Mahalanobis–Taguchi system on certain modal parameters of certain sets of measurement points, difficulties were faced in subjective selection of meaningful bridge modes and low sensitivity of the statistical pattern of the modal parameters to damage. For Nair’s damage indicator, bridge damage detection could be achieved by performing Mahalanobis–Taguchi system on Nair’s damage indicators of most sets of measurement points. As a damage indicator, Nair’s damage indicator was superior to the modal parameters. Three main advantages were observed: it does not require any subjective decision in calculating Nair’s damage indicator, thus potential human errors can be prevented and an automatic detection task can be achieved; its statistical pattern has high sensitivity to damage and, finally, it is flexible regarding the choice of sets of measurement points. After 6 years of real-world experience (and a bunch of used test wood for screwing in screws) I put together a list ofwhat I feel are the 7best multitools for everyday carry. These products take into account build quality, price, form factor, reliability but most importantly, my personal opinions and experience with each of them. One of the design features I think improves the use-ability of a multi-tool is being able to easily deploy at least a few of the tools without too much trouble. Usually, that means there should be a few tools that are outside accessible – you can get to them without opening up the pliers. The Truss scores well on this count with almost all the tools accessible from the outside. The only tool functions that aren’t are the plier functions.
