After much despair trying to scrape the wet excess product off off the gap / wood with a scraper, I found the best thing to do is to apply generously into the gap allowing it to protrude above the floor board level and then leave it for 1 hour or so to partially dry. After an hour take a sharp stanley knife blade and cut off the excess pushing the blade forward to cut the excess off rather than dragging it. You do not want to get the product smeared onto the floor boards at any cost because it will look terrible when it dries as it wont be the same colour as the wood.
